Since I find myself fixing my friends comps and setting up wireless networks ectr. For people at college I need a non scary!! multi tool so suggestions looking to spend around 30 to 50 or so.

This needs moving to the multi tool thread.

i've been carrying a leatherman sideclip for a couple of years now and really like it.

Non-scary multi tool?
I was not aware any of them were scary!

If you live somewhere that multi-tools are scary, it may be time to move.
Get the best, Leatherman Charge in black oxide finish.

Ironically, the gerber's best trait is what makes it scary. The one hand opening is a godsend in my opinion (Which is why my two leathermen sit idly in the garage) and I find I can accomplish so much more when I can access every tool on the gerber with one hand (with practice). But the slick opening makes some people think for a second I have a switchblade. And you look badass when other people try to open it one handed and can't get it to go (snap your wrist).

I just got a Fuse, which is nice and pretty non-scary.

First Gerbers are no where near as nice as they once were.

Second if your looking to use this for PC and electrical work then a good choice is Paladin's Powerplay series of tools. It's what they were made for. Sog makes them and I don't have anything negative to say about their tools. I think all the models will be over the $50 ( but keep an eye on ebay as they do go cheap sometimes - I recently got a sog powerlock for $27 and it's close to the same tool ).

If all you really need is to strip some wires and an occasional screwdriver look at the Leatherman Juice or Squirt series. Nicely made and very office friendly with the bright and sheeple pleasing colors.

I'll second the Fuse. You have to unfold it to get to the inner tools (not a "scary" one-hander like the wave/charge/surge). The blade, flathead, philips, scissors, etc all come in handy for most medium duty chores that you might come across. The zytel liner is nice on this model to make for a comfortable grip. The other nice thing that unlike the Kick, all of the tools lock open and don't tend to clump...if that is a concern of yours.

The fuse is very much like the PST that I used to care about 8 years ago. IMHO, Gerbers are bad news these days. Almost all of their multis are made in China. THis is not a bad thing in and of itself. Spyderco's Byrdrench is fantasticly constructed and it comes out of china...However, Gerber's factory in China is cranking out a lower quality product than just about every major tool manufacturer further tarnishing a once noble name in the knife community.:(

The Victorinox Spirit remains my favorite, of the several I've had. It is also the least scarey (?) with it's curved shape and blunt-tipped knife blade.

I drive a truck for a living. I'm looking for the most versatile/general purpose one. I prefer made in USA if possible. I currently carry a leatherman but the design is NOT conducive to squeezing the handles hard (bites into fingers bad) I'm not looking for a "task specific" tool, more like your "all arounder". I definately like the idea of being able to get to the tools with one hand, as often as not I'll have a flashlight in the other. Speaking of flashlights.........SF

Sam, I would reccomend the LM Core.. Bill, I would not go with Gerber mainly because they are not high quality tools... I would go for the LM Blast for $50. Or you can shoot for a Paladin Powerplay... If you want a small tool get the PowerPlay PT-510.. Has all the tools you would need in your particular field and it is small. Or if you want to go a little biggger than get the PT-525 which is basically a Powerlock frame..

Seems like you are working an earlier model Leatherman. Current offerings have plastic inserts or rounded handles, much easier on the hands, no worse than regular pliers. Take a look, maybe it's time to upgrade. Leatherman one-handers are Wave, Charge and Surge.

I don't think the handles on the plastic insert Leatherman models are very comfortable. The expensive Leatherman models like the Wave are easier on the hands, though.

I would rather have the smooth rounded handles of my Victorinox Swisstool Spirit, which has all tools accessible without opening the pliers.

The Spirit also is one of the more cost efficient "full size" multitools, often being available from amazon or ebay for under $50. Example.
