Anyone had similar immediate needs, and what did you chose??

1800 ft sq raised ranch.

Currently 50K BTU furnace and 2-ton AC unit.

what size trane do they reccomend for 2700 sq ft single story, and not the minimum one but one that will be most efficient??

We replaced a system a few years ago and got an off brand made by Trane, I believe. We were amazed at the immediate savings from a new and updated system, close to 30% per month.

A friend did the install and we never had an issue with it. Shop carefully and you should be able to get a good deal.

Take a look at Lennox, they make a good reliable product. Trane, and Keeprite, and Kerr are also good choices.

Don't even bother looking at mid effieciency furnaces,as fuel is expensive compared to the furnaces themselves. My choice would be a condensing furnace with a 95% or better efficiency. A condensing furnace does not need a regular chimney, but rather are Direct Venting. These units vent through the wall much like a drying does. They burn very clean emmiting little more than some moisture ladden exhaust-just like your drier.

For your size of house 50,000 BTU sounds about right, so don't go any bigger on the burner. An over sized burner will result in uneven heating and short burner cycles use much more fuel and can cause dirt buildup in the combustion chamber resulting in a shorter lifespan of the furnace.

I second the motion to not go for cheaper but more efficient.

I installed an oil boiler in my house in place of my old propane burner. I saved the $3400 it cost to install in less than two years!

Get the most efficient unit you can afford if you are planning on living in the house for 10 years or more. Don't know if a variable speed air handler is an option with a furnace. I sure like mine..quiet and efficient. I went with Trane.

Hey Guys..

ThatMguy...

We've got a ranch house as well not sure on the Squares though...

We are running a 2 ton horizontal mounted Water Furnace and it works Beautiful...

However install is MAJOR.. They drilled 4 250' wells for it out on the side yard...

Total came out to about $25G

I've got a Natural Gas 80 High in my shop with a 2 Ton AC pump, heating/cooling 1200 Square feet and it works Great..

I get that shop chilled at about 68 on a hot summer day and it's Paradise!!! :)
My buddy did the install for me, and cost was about $1800.00 including about 200 ft of gas plumbing.

I own a ranch as well that is a tad under 1800 ft-sq, but have a full basement as well - increasing the volume of air to heat/cool. I was just curious if a basement is included in the advice and/or your scenario.

Yes, includes lower level.

HVAC friend came over, explained about the horizontal venting for the higher efficiency furnace units.

Also looking into 2-stage units for efficiencies.

He's working prices for me.

Decisions, decisions....

Trane, American standard, Carrier, and those micro units by mitubishi or sanyo are very good units. Not only do hvac companies need to know sq ft, but is the area well insolated. Do not go too large (tonnage) of a unit. Over sizing can cause floodback and shorting compressor life. Ac unit works by removing btus for the indoor air and places that heat outside. Without proper heat transfer it can cause floodback to compressor. Liquid refrigerant can not be compressed. I recommend .5 to 1 ton if your must go over recommend tonnage. For example my house in AZ is 2390sq ft block home with little insulation on the outer walls. I replaced a 4.5 ton heat pump with an American Standard gas pack of 5 tons. Works well for 5 years. Yes I have replacement parts sitting in my shop in case of failure.

Hvac tech seems smart. Two stage are awesome for saving energy.
