I need a backup edc knife to my Spyderco Tenacious, I love it, I really do, but I need somehing else besides it that is around the same size and price. Looking for plain edge, preferably hollow ground, and about the same size and price of the Tenacious.

This question has been asked a ton recently. The general suggestions are:

Kershaw Leek (or Blur for ~$80. Blems can be had for 40-50 from kershaw guy)
Buck Vantage pro (great steel, great price, people love it or hate it)
spyderco persistance (can be had for 30 bucks from a certain huge online retailer that sounds like I "am a Zion"

These are pretty much all flat ground. Why do you want a hollow ground? The edge isn't nearly as durable as a convexed and it doesn't slice as nice as a full flat ground.

Why do you need a backup? Would you consider saving up a bit, so you have $80 or so? If you can spend ~$80 you could get a Manix2, which is a fantastic EDC.

Honestly your best bet is to go to somewhere that sells knives online and look at brands you like, sorted by price. Don't be shy about clicking the "next page" button on the bottom of General Knife Discussion". You will literally find 10's of threads in the last month or so asking your exact question. You'll see lots of great suggestions and pictures of knives.

Have fun, good luck.
EDIT:
As an aside, if you want something just like a tenacious...why not get another tenacious? You can get them in different colours. I think there is a red one. You could move 1 red scale to the other tenacious and have a cool looking black and red frankenstein tenacious.

Love that idea, and I take back what I said about my grind preference.

Also, im looking for a backup because sometimes its nice to spice things up. Oh and its in case something happens to my Tenacious. I have the money right now for a nice pricey blade, but I am very against the idea, heres why: if I spend a lot of coin on a knife, and something happens to it (badly damaged, lost), ill be super pissed

Ontario RAT-1 also a good choice, same price range as Tenacious, I got them both.

^^ Don't be against spending good money on a knife because of fear of it getting ruined.
I used to be the same, now I own knives in several price ranges and use them all.
Just use it like you normally would and take good care of it.
No need to fear having a great knife, just keep it in the pocket when not being used, take care of it, use it as the tool it is, and just do the regular maintenance.
I second the Manix 2 as an excellent EDC.

But in your preferred price range... Maybe pick up a Spyderco UKPK Lightweight with Drop Point or and Leaf shaped blade. It's not locking but is solid enough open to not close on your fingers. The choil helps with this as well. BD-1 steel is also a really good one. Holds its edge well, easy to sharpen, takes a nice edge. Great knife overall. It's a little smaller than the Tenacious but would be great for EDC. I EDC'd one for a long time. You could even carry it along with your Tenacious if you wanted.

Good luck.

Bladechick777,
Thanks for the recommendation, ill give it a look. And ive taken your advice about not being afraid of higher price blades, im looking at Cold Steel now, particularly the Recon 1 tanto or the ak47

The rat-1 or manix will make a more useful edc than cold steel. The steel isn't great on cold steel. I don't care for tlcold steel knives personally...the marketing is so annoying

Cold Steel doesn't make bad knives at all. They make decent knives for EDC and Hard Use. However, AUS-8 steel, while being a decent steel does leave a little to be desired, especially at the price point of the Cold Steels.

Maybe look into a Spyderco Manix 2 like mentioned before. It's a great EDC and hard use blade. I used mine for everything and have regretted letting it go since day one.

A Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is also a great blade for all around EDC.

The steel on both is much better than that on the Cold Steel knives and they aren't much more expensive if at all. Those would be among my choices.

However, if the CS knives have what you're looking for, go for it and enjoy it. You'll keep moving up over time as well lol. Knives are too much fun to play with and use to be scared to do so. =]

My thoughts, in the order they meandered through my brain as I read your original post:

- why not just buy another Tenacious?
- Ontario Rat-1
- Spyderco Delica (taken me ages to get one and is quietly easing the Tenacious out of my EDC)

In the $30.00 price range, I purchased an Ontario JPT 3R.
I was so impressed with the knife, that I purchased another.
Great value for the money, for sure.
