Hey folks!

I got an itch that needs scratchin....

I am in the market for a new flipper.

I already have the following from ZT: 0801, 0301, 0350, 0566

I am looking at either a ZT 0560 BlackWash OR a Spyderco Southard. I know, quite different knives.

I like the what I read about both, but am unsure which to get.

The steel on the Spydie should put the Elemax to shame correct?

Looking for any thoughts on this as I think it through.

Thanks so much in advance!

Drew

I prefer the ergos, flipping action and steel on the spydie over the 0560.

Note that ergo's are a personal thing and I'd reccomend handeling both prior to purchase if possible.

I was able to get hands on a 0561 a few months back. She's a haus to be sure. No southards around for me to work with. Is the southard a reasonably Stout package? I'm not an abuser but I am a user ZT's always feel really solid to me. Just denser for lack of a better term.

You have several ZT's so why not try something else? I really like the Southard, not typically a Spyderco fan either. I've also been looking at the Dendra flippers lately. There's also the Fantoni HB01 and HB02, both on my list.

Ive got Both. I carried the 0560bw the first weeks of buying it, when it was new and all. But now, it's just to bulky for My taste. But it's a great looking knife tbh. But the Southard is alot better looking.
If you can handle the size of the 0560 and are going hard use it, i Would recommend that.
But for EDC i Would say the Spydie. Mine has carbonfibre scales and overtravelstop instead of Brown g10.
I think it's My most carried knife.
You wont be dissapointed of either.
But the f&f on spydies from Taiwan, is very hard to beat tbh.

Good luck My friend. Hope i was to any help. If you want more info about any of the Knives, Shoot! :)

Thanks TOR! Very helpful info. I thought the only southard out there was the brown g10 version. Where did you get yours?

Must be custom scales, only the brown has been released by Spyderco. They have a black one in the works too, which looks badass! (link)

Thanks JDunn! So there is no insert over the end of the lock bar face? Any cause for concern there long term?

Definitely Spydie. And yes, it should put Elmax to shame. Also, the lockbar is either carburized or carbidized and it doesn't suffer the lock slip issues that I had on my 0560. I much prefer the lockup on the Southard

Hey Drew78, tough choice. I have the 0561 and Southard. Both are favorites of mine, so I'd be hard pressed to decide. Below are some comparison pictures that hopefully will help your decision. I think based on the knives you have I'd push you toward the Southard. It really is very solid and has deceptively good ergonomics - something that can't be portrayed adequately in photos. I like the Ti machining on the back of the 0561 and it's overall look, but I could do without the jimping on the frame. Both are exceptionally smooth flippers. There is definitely a noticeable size difference. The Southard is even more compact than the 801, but it's not small. You have the beefy 0301, so maybe it's time to try another rock solid blade in a compact package? Good luck with the quest. No wrong choice between these two.

Great pics thanks so much! That was very helpful as was everyone elses replies.

I agree with you all, time to try a new style of flipper. While I have a number of Spydies, I think my next acquisition will be the Southard. Lets face it, I will more than likely own the ZT 0560/1 at sometime in the next few months anyway!

Thanks again guys, much appreciated!

Handle them first if you can. I'm not a big flipper fan. And I think it is because most of the flipper knives I have don't fit right. Except the 0801. That ugly thing just works for me.

I am a flipper lover. I admit and accept it. Just such a cool way to open a knife IMO.

Agreed on the 0801. When I first saw it, I was drawn to it by all the reviews saying how smoooooth it was. And it is for sure. BUT, it does fit the hand very well which surprised me.

It is my "work" knife as its a bit more "refined" for the business world and it carries deep.

Thanks JDunn! So there is no insert over the end of the lock bar face? Any cause for concern there long term?

I remember Brad Southard saying the proto had been flipped an absurd amount and was still solid, I believe the lockface is heat treated to increase hardness?

I wouldn't worry about it because Spyderco is a company that stands behind their products!

Get a Mini Division.

Yeah, it's the best flipper i own. Flips 10 Times' better than My Curtiss F3 lol.. Think something is wrong with the F3 tho, so i'm not even using it.. Have open like 2 cardboardboxes with it :S
But the Mini Division is a good choice if he want to spend that kind of money. Not sure about the D2 tho, seems like mine has already gotten a bit dull..

I am aware of Brous Blades and while I don't own any of their stuff yet, they look great.

I have several blades in D2 and I am really wanting to try a "super steel" on my next folder. That Southard fits the bill.

Also cant wait for the new ZT 0562 CF!
