Hello Ladies and Gents, I am new to this forum and know really very little about quality knives. I am looking to purchase a lock blade, something that looks exactly like a gator clip blade as I like this design, but I want allot better quality. Can someone fill me in on what kind of blade I should look for for eg ats-34, d2, 440c I know there are better steels out there but I am unsure which have the best qualities, edge retention is a must, and money isnt really an issue up to about $1000.00 Can keep in mind the dimesions and style MUST be very close to the gator clip blade. thanks for all your help in advance.

Hi Dale,

first off, welcome to the forums!:)

you should start by reading the excellent FAQ on steel here BF steel faq. In addition to that, try searching the forums for S30V, S90V, CPM3V, talonite, stellite.

ok, $1000 is a lot of money for a knife. I'm afraid it's a little out of my league to suggest the BEST knife you can get for under $1000, but I'm sure others will chime in shortly to advise you.

I think there might be custom makers who might even build a one-off for you for less than $1000. If it were me, I'd ask RJ Martin, Kit Carson, Mike Obie, Daniel Winkler, Kevin Wilkins, Pete Martzitelli, Jens Anso, Neil Blackwood to build me one in damascus or in talonite.

good luck on your quest!
:)

I'll agree- if you need it to be just like the gerber, you can get a custom for less than a grand-and support small business, and have wicked bragging rights.--Joe
