Hey guys. Quick rundown. A while ago I thought I might try a traditional knife, and get away from the modern era for a bit. Well, thanks to you guys, I ended up grabbing a farm and field #71 in green micarta, and also a blue camel bone madison barlow from Northwoods. Long story short, they have not come out of my pocket since I got them a good while ago now, and I am just loving traditionals now. I can't even believe I didn't get any good traditionals before, and am kicking myself now. I did grow up with some cheaper traditionals so it brings back memories as a kid just having them in the pocket so that is just a bonus. But, I am sure glad I sold off almost all my moderns, and again, i am just loving the slip joints, and I now feel the need for another.
The swedge on my Madison wasn't perfect though, and with the pin starting to show in the bolster again recently I sent her off back to GEC for a touch up. And, I've been missing it the last few days but my #71 has kept me pretty happy
So, let me start with this. After looking at probably thousands of pics of different patterns lately, I have narrowed it down a bit. And, since I am can't afford a Davison just yet, I think my heart is leading me straight towards the sfo TC Barlow with single blade, long pull. Now, I do know that these were limited, and I think I saw on the GEC site that they just had another run called the Ancient barlow, with a little different blade than I want, if I am understanding this all. And, it may not be a while until the one I want gets produced again if ever, so maybe someone can give me some advice or guidance as to how to obtain one that I want.
Right now my dream knife is the TC Barlow in saw cut red bone(is this what they call soup bone?), with a clip point, and preferable all steel and not nickel silver so it will all take a pretty even patina with age and use. And, I prefer the deep red bone that I see some were lucky to jump on. But, I admit I do also like the ebony wood or chestnut wood.
As far as blade shape, I tend to really want to try the clip point preferably, or spear but I just love the clip. And the long pull is gorgeous too. And I just never have been a fan of the sheepsfoot. Also, I am wondering what everyone else prefers as their favorite blade shape for the barlow if anyone feels like saying.
SO, all of a sudden, this overwhelming desire to have a TC barlow has hit me, and looking at gorgeous pics of everyone else's isn't helping me much. So, are there going to be more of these made? Or is the clip point and red covers a thing that won't be produced again? I am really unsure of how it all works with the Charlow, and I did try to look up some info before posting this thread, but I'm afraid I am just as confused than when I started.
If these won't be made again, I assume I will have to hunt for one on the exchange but I don't think I see them too much. Anyone want to help me out and point me in the right direction? I was thinking of emailing Charlie since I found his email address in another thread about these, but I don't know if I want to bother him if there won't be any new ones produced for a long time. I did read that I could get on the early list, but if I understand correct then its already too late for the Ancient ones with the weird (to me anyway) blade shape, which I am not as crazy about as the clip point with smooth bone.
Any advice or help is greatly appreciated. You guys really got me going with my first few traditionals, and just as I thought I am now needing more. As rare as everyone makes these Charlows seem, I am really praying I might still be able to find someone that has one or a few so I can pick....I know thats pushing it though...
Thanks again guys for any recommendations or advice on how I may obtain one of these gorgeous little knives. I know some guys were selling these I heard for like 3 times the original price somewhere like flea bay, but I'm hoping someone here can help me from getting too ripped off since I am kind of desperate for one of these now....
