So, I have a few questions and am open to comments.

The first is, im looking to replace a Full size 440C griptillian - probably with something that looks less menacing, like a mini-grip. Not sure if I want to go ritter grip...its a few bucks more. Suggestions? I only owned one knife but I liked it a lot - i didn't carry it on me all the time because of the fact that it looks mildly crazy to some people. So I guess a better way to put it, im looking to make it look more polite (im a student).

Now the other topic. My knife was stolen from my apartment, along with a crapload of other things. Thieves used a glass cutter to cut open the window. Took a lot. Don't have renters insurance. Don't know how much more you can do to protect a window...

Either way, what suggestions do you have for a window that sides like that - and what woulda happned If they enter your house and I was in there...What am I 'allowed' to do...

I know many of you are not lawyers or LEO's or whatever - im just wondering what you 'think'.

Thanks a lot.

Check out the mini Ritter Grip with the yellow handle.

Put bars on the windows.

:D Keep Supporting real Metal!!

That's pretty darn cool of you my friend. Nice gesture.

That's why I like knife folks :).

First of all, why wasn't this knife in your pocket!!??

Windows aren't easily protectable without some "armoring" but you can get this fairly easily for not too much $$$. Basically some bars, aluminum or rolled steel that'll screw into the frame.
If not that, you can get a set of like 10 window alarms for a few bucks. Might not send all of em packing, but it'll cause a ruckus so if you've got neighbors, they might help.

If your apt. was a good enough target (read: EASY enough) for those robbers, chances are it's a twinkle in some other criminal's eye.

Your best chance is still to lock up valuables, or at least hide them well.

Sucks your knife got lifted man!
Cold Steel turns out a good product, I'd reccomend em to just about everybody.

If there's anything any of us can do, let us all know! We're happy to help, I know I am.
For my next place (moving out of college apt. in a month or so) I'm buying a (another) handgun with serious stopping power (10mm probably), and with my EE skills I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to rig up an inconspicous alarm circuit for the windows. Basically a line of light/laser that'd beep when interrupted. That's the principle most beeping alarms of this type work on, you can find that kinda thing at Walmart, or check online.

Good luck

As others said, bars and alarms. But do something. Thieves often tend to come back when they think it's easy pickings.

As far as preventing door kick-ins, a deadbolt with a 1" throw plus a strike plate with 3" screws should do it. Standard screws just won't do it and the door frame will easily fail.

This depends on where you live. In some places, you can shoot them if they merely enter your residence uninvited. I noticed you are in California, so it probably isn't like that there. I'd check the laws and maybe with a lawyer.

You may only be able to shoot if they pose a serious danger to your life.

I suggest buying a shotgun or handgun and practicing with it regularly.

It is lousy to have anything stolen.

Get a cheap safe. Sentry makes small digital safes that you can bolt onto a shelf in the closet. Stack-on makes a wall safe that you can bolt to the wall in your bedroom closet. Both cost under $100.00. Yes, they can be taken, but with much more difficulty.

Also, talk to the apartment manager. If there have been a large number of thefts, they should provide an alarm system or you should be able to move.

Think about moving anyway. Successful thefts are often repeated.

Do not ask an LEO what to do when it comes to legal issues like self defense. They are always allowed to use lethal force when threatened with physical violence. So their response is going to be "Kill them" more often than not. They aren't lawyers. Ask a lawyer. Ca varies greatly from locale to locale. But being CA - chances are it's more liberal and protective of it's criminals than say, Texas. Add in a college and yer prolly in trouble.

I used to live by Prather, CA. Not too long ago a priest shot some guy dead that came into his parish and was trying to kill one of his parishoners. That was a very conservative community, though...for California.

Now one more thing you need to do - check to see if any keys are missing. Ya don't want to make it easier on them for the next time, and ya don't want to lose your car or your parents belongings in case they got some car or house keys etc. I would change my bank account(at least the # if you want the same bank) etc. Assume they know everything. And get a credit check within a week to make sure they aren't trying to steel your identity or have new credit cards sent to them. Credit card companies love to 'help' new students out.
Good luck,

WYK

Bars, man. :) Heck, it's the family business. A set of 1/2" steel rods, set into a 1/2" square steel grid, secured with a half-dozen Texas-licensed Torqs. I could darn near pull down a house with that rig. Single window, you're looking at $75 or less.

The thing that sucks is that the items are not 'safeworthy'. Meaning they're items like my Ipod or laptop that just can't be regularly put in a safe without major inconvinience.

I wasn't even gone for the memorial day weekend...just a night of the memorial day weekend...and I was in town, I just crashed at someone elses place. Another thing that bothers me is how anyone would know - considering my spending the night at someones house was for the most part sporatic...

Perhaps I was being watched...
The bars Idea seems pretty good - I thought about it - i'll talk to the apt manager and see what he's gonna do...otherwise I might wanna find a new place...I could see this happening again even with all the measures I took.

I didn't bring the knife cause I was just hanging at a buddies house having a few drinks etc.

Man...Darrell - I can't believe your offer! I'm not really sure if I want to accept - thats really nice of you reguardless. I'll send you an e-mail shortly.

Thanks for everyone elses advice as well - very helpful of you guys, and good advice.

Thanks again,
SteelGuy

if somebody breaks in to my house and dont pay verry close attention to the instructions that i give him im not going to worrie about laws. ill check the net for laws before i call the cops, if im in the wrong theres a nice deep well out back and several bags of concreate. :D

Glass cutter entry? Wow. That's rare.

Ask the landlord to consider replacing the glass with polycarbonate. It's a bit more expensive (but not that much) and quite difficult to break in through. Heck, if you want to you can get it in bullet-resistant.

I would suggest getting a Pit Bull. If they are foolish enough to come inside then- game over. Otherwise, bars on the windows- or some thick coated glass that wont break easily, or maybe plexi? Sorry to hear about the loss. :(

From what you've described this break in sounds like it was someone you know or a neighbor that knows your routine. Like you said, someone may have been watching you.

Neighbors see you come and go all the time and get a good idea of your schedule. Just a shot in the dark, but did you leave your apartment with a change of clothes, or other items that may have tipped someone off that you weren't going to be home for the entire night?

Unfortunately thier's alot of dirt bags in this world. And there's nothing I hate more than a thief.

The pointy end of your new knife goes into the robber. :D

You put your knife down for something other than to get on an airplane or going to court for bringing a knife on an airplane? I don't get it. And is there a better time to have a knife than when you're drinking? :)

From your description though it does sound like a neighbor. And I watch a lot of CSI so I should know. ;)

I agree, it is likely someone who can see your place from their window. Do you know your neighbors very well? Suspect everyone!
