Ok guys, I've decided its time to buy a knife, period. Not going to wait, once I decide, I'm going to buy it.

Here's my criteria:

- Good blade steel
- >3" blade
- Strong lock
- Price range: <$130.

I've looked at the Chinook II and seriously came very close to buying it, but I think I might want a Benchmade Axis lock..I was looking at the 806 with D2.

Please reccomend a knife that you've had good experience with, and one that matches my criteria.

Thanks,

-Django :)

I have an 806D2. Not a bad knife by any means but it never seems to make it into my EDC rotation. I either have my Sebenza or SnG on me for the heavier cutting jobs or, in the office I generally have my Calypso or occasionally my mini Grip. Going by your limited set of criteria though I would say that the 806 is certainly well worth a look.

Yeah, I absolutely love its looks, and it will most likely become my EDC. (I'm upgrading from a CRKT M21, you see)

My only problem is that it may be too big. I love the opening hole, axis lock is a big +, and so are the G-10 handles. In your personal opinion, do you think it is too big?

A very difficult question to answer, after all, what is "too big"? For my purposes it is, in fact, a little too big. I would not find it comfortable to carry in my jeans pocket for instance. My Strider is a little shorter and is a little better in the pocket although I carry it in a kydex sheath. The Sebbie fits nicely in the pocket.

On the other hand the 806 has, in my opinion, a useful blade shape. Much better that the Strider, or even the Calypso for jobs like slicing and peeling fruit and so on. It's certainly a solid, well made knife and the hole and Axis lock were selling points for me. I would recommend for people with hands on the larger side which mine are not.

If a slightly larger folder is what you're after I don't think you'll be disappointed. You might also want to look at a Griptillian or, perhaps, a Spyderco Native.

In any case, if at all possible, try to handle whatever you're interested in before buying.

The thing that turns me off about the Griptillian is the 440 steel. I mean, what is that, the liner of the 806? :D

Hmm. I think the Para is a little too small of a blade..

And the Manix is a little too big (blade geometry-wise)

I think I'll probably go with the 806.

It's not "440", it's 440C, one of the best all-round knife steels on the market IMO.

I've seen some nice lnib Mayo/Buck 172's go for what you are talking about spending.

Titanium handles, framelock, Paul Bos heat treated s30v, great Mayo TNT design with legendary Buck construction....that's a lot of knife for the money.

Just my .02

If you don't mind a push button auitomatic, get a Microtech UMS. I love mine. I fits your criteria and you can pick up used ones LNIB for that price.

If you're coming from an M21, check out a BM710. Mine always seems to crawl into my pocket. I tell it to stay, and chain it to the back porch, but then I'll be out on the other side of town and find it in my pocket... ;)

If you have a couple more bucks, get your hands on an Emerson CQC-10. Sweet.

Peace.

My latest knives are the Benchmade 806 D2 and the Spyderco R Knife, I love both, but the Benchmade is too large for jeans pocket carry, but I absolutely am crazy about the Spyderco R Knife. Very light because of the cut out frame, and it is a perfect size for every day carry. It has a great feel in my hand and it is my first Spyderco! The axis lock on the Benchmade is fantastic, but sizewise, the Spyderco has been in my pocket since.

Buy it online through www.cabelas.com. Their Grips and Mini-Grips are all in D2 Steel, an exceptionally good steel. Around $ 70.

If you can find one anywhere, the new Spyderco Calypso Jr. in ZDP-189 is an incredible knife for around $ 70. It made a Spyderco fan out of this BM Guy.

Just to let you guys know, I decided on the Chinook II, which should be arriving Wednesday. ;)
