Here we go again; I need a new knife. Tell me what you'd recommend. It will be used for general utility / everyday carry. Here's my criteria:
Price: Under $40
Blade Length: Preferably in the 2" to 3" range, but bigger is okay.
Fixed blade or folder, doesn't matter.
No wood grips or handle.
No leather sheath.
An assisted-opener is better for me than a traditional folder.

I was looking into a Buck Hartsook Neck Knife (860BX), a 2" fixed S30V blade. A Kershaw Needs Work (1820), 3" Sandvik 13C26 blade with speed assist. A Buck XTract (730BKX) with a 3" 420HC blade. Gerber Valloton (1528), a 2.5" 440A blade with speed assist (I've heard that Gerber has gone downhill).

Before I get recommendations, I already have the following to fit this criteria:
Byrd Cara /Cara in G-10 (I have 6 of these). Kabar Dozier Folders (I have 2 of each). Kershaw Scallion. Countless Victorinox SAKs.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I thought we just went though this with you in February.
You're all over the map. Maybe start searching, and READING the posts.
Reading is good, you learn, and it makes you feel good that you did it on your own, not having someone else do your leg work.

Yes, I asked a similar question in February. I have been reading the posts. And a lot of the time, for some reason, the search function doesn't work. Anyway, I've looked at (on-line, for lack of a local store) most of the knives I named. But I've never used, handled, or even seen them in person. I wanted to know the personal experience of the people on this forum as some advice.

I recommed you address your needs first. It seems like all you have is folders. Its time you get yourself a decent fixed blade. Ill make three recommendations
1) a Mora
2) Rat 3 Shop around it might go over 40 though
3) a neck knife, possibly the new one by Kabar maker of the TDI(more or less 20 bucks!)

I have Moras, they're great knives for the price. I forgot to mention the few fixed blades I have: Some old (before Taylor Cutlery bought them) Schrades; Guide Master, Blade Runner. Various machetes and kukris. A cheap dive knife. Standard-issue Kabar. Various Beckers. But that's it.

I'll look into the new Kabar neck knife, thanks :-)

Instead of buying so many cheap knives why don't you spend your money on a $100+ good quality knife?

I'd go with the Byrd Cara Cara that you mentioned.

$40 ??

I've paid more than that for sharpeners!

If you've got countless SAKs, then I agree that it might be time to save up a couple bucks and go upscale.

What with it being the time of the year it is, why not buy a new blade for your Toro and make a knife out of it next winter?
