Hello fellow BF forumites. My crappy butane lighter finally died recently after serving me surprisingly well for 7 years. As such, I'm now in the market for a replacement and I was hoping you could throw me some suggestions. Here are my specs:

- must be a butane lighter with a blue jet flame
- must be windproof/wind resistant
- hoping to spend less than $100
- not crucial but it would be a major plus if the flame points forwards

Thanks in advance! :)

Are you looking for a cigarette lighter or something to take with you in the woods. Because if you want a camping lighter, just go pick up a $20-$30 butane torch from the hardware store. Mine is a BernzOmatic, it holds a big old tank of fuel and works well when trying to light a fire in the cold. Beware though, you need to keep it above 31 F (-.5 C) or else it won't work, they're not well insulated and the butane needs to be a gas. I suppose you could use it as a cigarette lighter too, but they're not exactly pocket sized.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've looked into the BernzOmatic lighters and I do quite like them for camping trips. However I'm looking for something a little more pocket friendly and a little more classy than a camping lighter.

Okay, Zippo Blus look cool. I don't have one yet, but I've seen one someone else had, it was horribly ugly because it had a dragon or some odd thing on the side of it, but it worked good. I'm planning on getting a mirror finish one when I feel like spending money on it. Only issue I see with it is that it starts using flint instead of an electric starter which may be an issue in high wind.

Windmill brand of "stormproof" lighters. Just do a search for them online, they go for $29-55 and come in a range of neutral colors to blaze orange & armored versions. It is my "go to" outdoors torch lighter, and also for my cigars.

One caution, I discovered that if you travel in very high altitudes (way above timber line), no butane lighters work due to lower air pressures.

My Windmill doesn't work anymore, I suppose I could send it back for repairs but that's kind of annoying.

Revere Supply Co., Inc. offers a two-year limited warranty of its Windmill and UST Stormproof Lighters
for mechanical defects that have not resulted from improper use of the product. Please refer to the
owner's manual to determine proper operating instructions. Warranty does not apply to the outer
finish; however, damage affecting the functionality of the casing is covered.
Lighters with original proof of purchase date may be returned within the warranty period (2 years) at no
charge.
Lighters with no proof or purchase, or beyond the warranty period may be returned for repair with a
check or money order for $25.

Just found this about Windmill lighters. When I bought it, it had a lifetime warranty, not anymore apparently. From what I'm reading now, they're kind of hit or miss, and that it's not uncommon for them to stop working after a few months. Honestly, I'd buy a flea market butane lighter for a couple of bucks before I spent another 30ish on one of these.

The Primus Power Lighter meets all your requirements. Ive got one myself and ive been very happy with it.

Its practically windproof.
The butane compartment is transparent plastic, allowing you to see how much fuel is left.
The nozzle is covered keeping it lint-free.
You can buy a adapter for it, allowing you to refill from regular gas-canisters.

So I've checked out the Zippo Blu and I like the look and feel of it but I'm not a fan of the flint starter.
So far the Primus Power Lighter is the closest to what I'm looking for and I plan to pick one up  However I'm still looking for something similar that's smaller and a bit more classy; something that I could have with me when I'm in more formal attire.

I purchased a Zippo blu about a year after they came out for cigar smoking. What a piece of garbage that was. I hope they have been improved since. Worked fine in the beginning, then became increasing difficult to light and got to the point that my thumb was raw. A lot of people were complaining about them then.
What I use now is a regular old zippo with a Z-plus butane insert made by a separate company. Love it! no problems at all, adjustable, and you can pick from the hundreds of
different Zippo bodies out there.

You can buy a Zippo of any style you want and add then get the Z-plus butane insert.
