so i recently lost my leatherman wave after 4 years of hard use, so i figure that its time to move on and find a replacement for it. im open to all suggestions, my only restrictions are that it is under $100, has a good pair of pliers and a locking blade. but if i have to i can do without the locking blade...

If you can wait until September Leatherman has a new one coming out: the Leatherman OHT. Google it. Looks awesome and will be around $70.

How much hard use will it see, and how many of the other tools do you really need? I ask because I carry a Skeletool now. The blade is handy and the pliers, while smaller than most fullsize Leatherman tools, are strong. It carries bits for flat and Philips drivers, large and small at opposite ends.

What about the Gerber 600? It is made in the USA and the cutters are made if you damage one you can rotate them around and replace them too. The knife is a locking blade as the rest of the tools.

I also carry a Skeletool CX and today I received my new Barrage 580...this thing is beautiful, but I use realized that I probably won't use it. Now, I know what you said earlier about getting two knives, but this is different...I'm not carrying a Skeletool and the Barrage. I hate shopping online. :dispirited:

Almost any near top of the line multi-tool fills your requirements and if you shop around hard enough can be found for less than $100. There are a lot of good choices. Swisstool, SOG Powerlock, Leatherman 3000 or Wave, Gerber 600, etc. What other tools/blades would you like in the tool? Do you prefer access to the tools without opening the handles? Personally I prefer the outside opening tools on the Swisstool so that's my EDC now, but I also like the pointier pliers that Leatherman has on their tools

I'd recommend the Victorinox SwissTool X, which is the full size model with the scissors instead of the serrated blade. ($70)

All the tools (except the pliers) are accessible from the outside of the handles, and they all lock via an elegant slicing latch. Usual Victorinox build and finish quality. I believe it is a bit bigger than the Wave, and there's no one-handed-opening tools, but if you can do without that, it is about perfect.

If you want something lighter and smaller, I recommend the Leatherman Juice S2. ($40) This one is not quite as heavy-duty as the Victorinox SwissTool or Leatherman Wave, but it is truly pocket sized.

If you liked your Wave, why not re-up?

Familiarity with your EDC tool counts for something. After, say, four years, you pretty well know what it can and can't do, how to get the most from its strengths and minimize its deficiencies. Some things you no longer even have to think about, like gripping the handles in such a way that you don't pinch your palm like you used to when it was new (ah, memories ). Do you really want to go through a similar get acquainted period with another make?

It's good to have one less choice in life to deal with. Personally, if ever my Charge TTi got lost, I would replace it (unless, of course, Leatherman comes up with something better :D ).
