I currently use a Camelbak Mule. It is too small and I do not want something with a water bladder or laptop slot. I do not want a giant pack, just something a little larger than the Mule.

I like the stiffness of the Mule and I currently throw a Spec Ops Pack Rat into the main compartment but that leaves little room for anything else. I would at least like to be able to also pack a light jacket and a lunch.

I am interested in Maxpedition and Tactical Tailor but I have no clue which one I am looking for - there are just too many models.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

I use both these packs and find them just right for day hikes and hunting. I don't like water bladders so I just don't use it.

Camelbak HAWG Capacity: 1099 cu.

Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon Capacity: 1400 cu.

for reference, the MULE is 540 cu.

Check out Kelty brand back packs. They make some great zipper-packs. I have a redwing, and I would recommend it, but it may be bigger than what you are looking for.

The Black Diamond Nitro Pack is awesome too. This one is very comfortable. It sounds like the size you are looking for.

I just picked up 5.11'a Rush 24 pack and LOVE IT! They make a smaller (Rush 12) that might be more what you're looking for.

Great quality and very comfortable.

I have a 32 litre black diamond top loading pack that I've had for about 3 yrs, and use it everyday for work to carry books and tools and other misc stuff. Has held up very well, and is very handy because you can decrease the volume with attached straps if you don't have a lot in it, but can fit larger items as well as the need arises.
