I need a new backpack, preferably around the $100 range but definately no more than $150. I'd prefer it to be OD but I'd settle Navy Blue or black. It needs to be well built to handle long terms of hard use, I used to use canvas because they last a lot longer than that REI brand nylon crap but I can't find a canvas pack that will fit around my gihugic shoulders, so a canvas one with large straps would be great. It needs to be able to fit around my big shoulders it needs to be larger than average. It doesn't have to be a frame pack but it shouldn't be too bulky, most of a great big pack will be unutilized space, it should however have a big enough compartment for a fair amount of gear. It should have a chest strap but I don't need a waist strap. No hydration packs. Anyone have any suggestions where I should start looking for something like this?

I like the Maxpedition Vulture-II. I have a 60" chest and it fits me fine. It can carry more gear than I want to lug around for more than 2 or 3 days and it's bullet proof. It does have a hydration slot in the back but I just use it to carry long flat gear like maps or sandpaper sheets for field stropping. You can also pack a hatchet in there too. Molle points on the side so you can add pouches as you want. It's a very versatile pack. I added a Maxpedition OCTA versapack on the front and it's been my go-to pack since I got it. I wouldn't call it large though. I'd say it's a medium sized pack. If you want a HUGE pack try the Blackhawk SOF Ruck. If you're lucky and take your time you can sometimes find one for under $150.00 on Ebay.

I was looking at that one but I e-mailed them and they said that the straps were smaller than the one I have now, and that one doesn't fit on me so I'm not sure if thier measurements were wrong or I didn't understand them correctly. Are the straps on it big enough to fit on a big guy with large spread out shoulders?

I tried one once, I have a 52-54 inch chest currently - I don't recall it being an issue. I currently use a North Face Solaris 40L - but it is nylon and has a bladder pouch.

Question, have you managed to destroy/wear out a nylon pack, or do you just disfavor it.

Little of both actually. I don't mind a nylon pack if if made of thicker material, but the one I had tare during a hike and I had to use duct tape to hold it together, since then I've just been kind of discriminating against them, my canvas pack lasted years until it went kerplunk during a canoe trip a couple of years ago but I don't remember the brand on it and I cant find it again.

Watch SierratradingPost.com for a discounted high quality hiking pack. You can get some great packs at great prices if you are patient.

You might consider a Maxpedition Kodiak or a Falcon II. I just picked up a new Falcon II and I'm pleased. Ordered it from Domingo at Precision Defense (pdefense.com) and couldn't have asked for a better transaction.
