Hi guys I'm getting a new fishing rod looking at the St Croix Mojo Bass MH F . Now to the difficult part . I don't know how to buy the right spining reel for it . Will like the some advise on how an what to look for when buying a spining reel . I will also like to see what's out the in the $60 to $120 price range . I was checking out the Phlueger President they look nice just don't know what ratio and what size I should get . Any advise will be helpfull .

Thanks

First we need to know what type of fishing you plan on doing with it...worm, top water, jig etc...

80% of what I use are senkos I also use spinners at time . I useally go out fishing 10 times a year so I'm looking for something I can use for senkos texas rig or wacky but still can work well with spinners and maybe a top water lure .

It also has to work with the rod that I'm getting . Gear ratio and all that stuff that I don't understand

A 6 to 7.1 would do good on all that. Don't know much about spinning gear as I never use it but if they are anything like baitcast a 50 or 100 size spool would be fine

Ok, so it looks like spinning gear are different than baitcast gear ratios, it looks like on the Pfluger, the only difference is the spool size. Maybe someone else can help out

When you buy your spinning rod look on the rod down by the reel seat and it should tell you what size fishing line is compatible to the rod. Example: 10lb. - 20 lb. test mono (or the braided fishing line equivalent) and go from there. For the fishing line you want to use (example: 16 lb. test mono) find a reel that will hold 150 to 200 yards of line in the pound test you wish to fish with.
Now go pick out a spinning reel that will match up to the spinning rod; ask the salesperson at the store where you purchase the rod to help you.

The weight of the reel should be so that when mounted the balance point is just in front of the foot of the reel. I have a MoJo Bass similar to yours and it has a Penn Battle 4000 on it.

Will the 4000 be a bit to big I was looking at the 3000
I wanted to go with a 3000 but the 4000 balanced the rod better. If you can find a store that has both ask if they mind if you bring your rod in to try different reels.

3000 size Shimano Symetre

However I have used spinning gear almost exclusively and I have never found a need for a MH rod. St Croix rods run heavier than most for each given action I would step that down to a medium power fast action as that will handle darn near anything. I have caught fish well over 20 lbs on a medium light fast action so a medium should do just fine.

So you will pare a MP fast action st croix with a Penn battle II 3000 . Also I use senkos most of the time but will be and all around rod so I will use spinners with it .
