After six years my $50 (including delivery) garage sale refrigerator finally died. I'm looking for a small 18-20 Cu Ft model for about $500 but don't know which brand I should be looking for. Are the Kenmores any good, what about hotpoint?

Always had good luck with Whirlpool

Whirlpool is good, but they have a second brand: Estate. Estate uses all the same compressors and hardware and such, but lacks the "gadgets" of the more up-scale Whirlpool branded versions. Estate doesn't have all the latest designer colors, etc.

They also have some up-scale names like Maytag and Jenn-Aire.

22 cu. ft. Jenn-Aire Side-by-Side frige, $2200.

21.9 cu. ft. Estate Side-By-Side fridge, $800.

The Jenn-Aire will have a fancy compartment just for keeping tofu fresh; the Estate won't. Of course, you can throw away a lot of tofu for $1400.

I would stay away from hotpoint, my experience they suck. however just did some research and you can get a descent new kenmore 18-19 cubic feet for 500 dollars.

I got a Kenmore from Sears. It appears to be a Frigidaire clone. 20.5 Cu ft for 550 and free delivery and a 12% rebate. Thanks for all your help.

You are probably ahead of the game efficency wise. Your older refriderator was probably using nearly 2X the energy your new one uses. Your new fridge will probably pay for itself in 3 years or less from what you were spending on electricity. There have been huge improvements energy efficency in refrigeration equipment in the last 10 years. I bought a new freezer to replace a 20 year old one and my electric useage went down 18% from this month last year. I saw similar improvements last summer when I purchased a new room air conditioner.

look for a scratch and dent-you can save a ton

Sears has an appliance surplus store near me in Livonia Mi. that sells scratch and dent merchandise. Everything is like 1/2 off the price, (or more). Some look bad like a huge dent in the door. Others you can't find the flaw. They all have a sticker telling the problem.

Any public library will have a Consumer Reports "buying guide" from the previous year. A friend of mine's refrigerator died this week -- and it was too old to order parts -- so she got a new 21 ci stainless steel Frigidaire from Lowes. On sale, it was about $700, including tax & delivery fees (which should be rebated after mail in).

They really try to f*** you with those mail-in rebates, too. You need to save your receipt, go back to get the rebate form they "forgot" to give you, then send a copy of the reciept with the completed form via certified mail just to make sure they actually send you a cheque a month later for a service they shouldn't even have charged you for in the first place!

I bet at least 1 out of 3 customers get screwed out of their measly $65 rebate cheque, one way or another.

Shadowblade, thanks for the tip about certified mail. I had to go to the internet to download the forms for the rebates and when I went back today they were gon. The rebate was good for purchases on the 4th and 5th only. Good thing I saved all the files on my computer.:D

make sure it is dead... fully thaw the cooling unit... use a hair dryer to speed things up... overnight if need be. plug her back in and you may be in business.
but fully defrost it. Is the motor still kicking in?
good luck...

I thawed it out and although it wouldn't get any colder than about 30 in the freezer and 50 in the refrigerator. It may have just needed freon but it was time for a new one.

:D
O.K.
Just checking... wife said ours was dead (found out later she didn't like the avocado green anymore :D)... just needed a total defrost when it couldn't keep up. Well built ones last forever with a little maintenance. Efficiency, colors and features change.
Got her a new one anyhow...
Make sure ya take the door off, kid trap.
If you buy new see if the take the old one as well or you may be stuck with a disposal fee, $50-75.
