Now..........taking into account that I'm a "newbie", and am not familiar with ANY knifemakers, can anyone recommend a great maker for an "everyday" damascus folder?? I'm looking for great "fit & finish", with an exceptional damascus. Fancy, "not so much".

Check it out with AG Russell link herein:

Russell's One Hand, Boker, Mccusta, and have good fit and finish. Of course there's the William Henry also listed in his online catalog. Some are damascus some are layered steel. I particularly like the William Henry if $$ aren't an issue.

I'm with you Troop. Some of the newer Boker knives are looking real good. The only thing I can say that would be an improvement, in my eyes, is why Boker didn't use a titanium frame on the damascus models. I mean they are charging custom knife prices for these and still using aluminum, in one form or another.

From one old fogey to another, I don't see anything "everyday" about a Damascus blade. That's just a personal opinion, though, so if you find one you like and can afford go for it. I just lean toward more basic and less expensive knives.

Yeah...why is that? What, like they think that people don't know the difference? Jeeze!:grumpy:

I am looking at the Damascus model by Mcusta Knives. I have ordered two models in VG10 because they were out of the Damascus/handle combo I was wanting. You should look at their web site mcustausa.com. The knives are beautiful.

I own one, the TAKE M-33 bamboo shaped layer steel handle, and I love it! AG Russell still has some in stock, I saw it the other day when I was in the showroom. They also stock several other models of Mcusta. There's a link above to AG's website. Search for Mcusta and check 'em out! He has the Boker too. I use this site alot just to look, they have good descriptions and pix, I may elect to search the web for better pricing however. I've seen the TAKE as low as 130.00 on the web.

"Dr. Mudd"- My experience with damascus, limited though it may be, is that it takes and holds an edge better than most other knife steels I have experience with. I figure I've got to put out pretty decent sum of $$$ for a good folder anyway, why not kick in a little extra & get a great blade?? If I am mis-guided in this, please let me know.

ALSO: Think I may have worded my enquiry wrong & caused some confusion- I am looking more for a knifesmith, not a company.

Why didn't you say so? :D If you get some Jerry Rados Damascus, and supply it to a good maker, they'll make it for you. But, you know what, right?
- Big Bucks, and a wait.:grumpy: Post over at the Knifemaker's Forum; you'll get some good responses.

Some of Bear MGC blades come with damascus. As a "USA Made" company, you can't go too wrong. Of course, although the hardness is probably not up to most steel snobs' standards, it will serve well as an EDC. If you want to step it up a bit, A. G. Russell sells some of his own designs with damascus with a core of harder steel sandwiched between high-contrast slabs of damascus. Usability with beauty. On par with A.G.'s stuff is McCusta, or anyone who uses the Japanese-made VG-10 core damascus out there.

Good luck, and let us know what you end up with.

Daniel

That is a gorgeous knife. Thanks to "rosconey2" for the referral. I'm checking into it as we speak. "rosconey2", do you own the knife?? If so, could you give me some details: blade length?, hardness?, handle material?, etc?

Why not go over to True North and check out the Mamoth Ivory Damascus Sebenzas. Short of a Custom they don't get much better than that. Steven

yes i own it- a little over 3" blade-handles are blued titanium, thin and light-as for hardness i never asked and dont care to be honest, i prefer to think the maker knows the best hardness and how much does it really matter- slippies have been far from hard for years and still do the job-hardness is over rated in most case's imho and is just used as a number to fight over-lol

rosconey2- Thanks, I appreciate the effort & the info. As to the "Sebenza"-I've looking @ those too, but for the money, I'm just not that impressed. Having never owned one, it's tough for me to put that kind of money into a knife, even if everyone raves about it. What makes it so much better?? (not meant sarcastic-I really would like to know)
