I live in Maryland Near B-more. I am a camper and an outdoorsmen and I am taking two of my friends who are well not. I wanted to know if you all knew of some good campgrounds or places to camp/state parks around here. I was lookin to keep it under or at 8-10 hrs drive. I was thinking Blackwater Falls in WVA and other places. Please Chime in Also Big Meadow in Shennendoah. The trip will be 3 days and we'll probably just be doing hikes from base camp, I might try to persuade them to camp on a trail one night.....we'll see. I have some water purification but I have a fealing we'll be bringing too much gear to go VERY far.

Ohiopyle State park in western Pa. near the Youghiogheny river is a great place to camp. I went there a couple of times and did a whitewater rafting trip on the river. Probably about a 4 or 5 hour drive.

Yeah I have rafted and kayaked there but never camped there, I will definatley look into that.

Check out Muddy Run campground, right over the line in PA. I've been going there since I was a little kid, I'm a little bitter that they cancelled the annual powwow up there. Heres some information, I think it might go by another name. Not too big of a park, but for newbies, it might be the ticket. Accessible from Rte 74 on the western bank, and 222 on the eastern bank of the Susquehanna. http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/susquehannock.aspx. If you're going soon, I would give the Susquehanna river a while to calm down.

I'm looking for some good local parks too. Rocks State Park doesn't offer much in the way of a real camping experience, but is a beautiful park nonetheless. After I lose my fat arse, I'd like to climb the King and Queens seat.

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/susquehanna.html near Havre de Grace is another spot, right on the Susquehanna, once again, wait until the Susquehanna calms down. A really beautiful spot, easy on beginners. I've been hiking and fishing up there since I was a little kid too. A friend of mine left his cane at a gas station up that way, and I jumped at the chance to get his cane, and took the afternoon hiking up there along the Susquehanna. Yeah, he got the cane the next day. I got one of his old ones out of the deal, real nice piece. I've been promising pics since I joined, I really got to post them.

Another one I thought of, I camped there when I was a kid, Assateague Island camp ground. Yeah, the horses can be a little nosy, and the landmines are all over the place, but I remember waking up and walking up to the beach and watching the sun come up. Neat experience, not full on woodcraft, but still an experience.

Heres the main site for MD parks, http://www.dnr.state.md.us/mdmap.html
and PA parks http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/

Damn, I gotta work tomorrow, and you've given me the travelling bug. I think I'm gonna at least take my fishing rod to work with me tomorrow.

On the way to Charlestown Races with a buddy of mine last year, we went through a park that I can't remember the name of, we were coming from Hagerstown if that helps anyone, and just from the road itself, the park was awe inspiring. Some beautiful country out there!

Check out the Dolly Sods in WV:

Beautiful place, especially Seneca Rocks and Bear Rock.

That main page is a beautiful shot.

Somewhere I've always wanted to visit has been the Catskills, after seeing it featured prominently in the end of Last of the Mohicans. That rock wall Uncas gets thrown off of is a sight to behold. One of my fathers employees climbed that rock wall, and got some great shots.

Savage River state forest in Garret Co. has some camp sites you can look into, but for the life of me I cant find my map to tell you where it is. So try googleing it. Also spruce knob lake campsite (its near senca rocks, other side of the allaghny front) has some places as well as some awsome backcounrty trails. Look into George Washington Nat. Forests as well.

Hay thanks alot guys I am going to swing this information by my friends and see what there up for and what they think they would like the most. I'll do anything and go anywhere pretty much(Slowly Doin the whole Appalachian trail:D ) so its up to them what were doin. I saw Savage River on a map some where and I am tryin to find its site online. Thanks again.

Have you tried Gambril Park in MD. It is very nice and I think you can camp there. Lots of trails.

I would second Dolly Sods. It fills up fast, but you can car camp at the Red Creek Campground which is up on top. From Red Creek you can drive up to the end of the road and check out Bear Rocks, or go south on the same road a few miles, and hike about a mile down Wildlife Trail to Rorhbaugh plains trail and check out the huge limestone cliffs. If you are feeling froggy you could go out Blackbird Knob Trail, which is right by Red Creek Campground and go down Red Creek trail to the forks of red creek which is a large flat area, cross the creek on the trail and go 1/4 mile or less. There is a path that cuts off steeply to the right with a kickass waterfall and swimming area. If you are not packing in you are talking 6 mile round trip so bring lunch.
