So, i have an Field Training Exercise and Air Assault school coming up. I already have an RC-4 tethered to my Load Bearing Equipment but I want a smaller fixed blade to keep on my person (also contemplating EDC'ing a small fixed) and was wondering whether to get the Izula or try to get the Hest...
thanks for the input

I would do the Izula , not having the HEST to compare to the Izula ; the Izula looks smaller and more compact, plus the Izula is available now

Here are the two side by side for comparison.
Tough call, they're both nice.

I'd go for the Izula. Good EDC size, and will make you a nice pair with the RC-4. Although I wish they'd put a bottle opener on the Izula... ;)

I would go IZULA, the top one looks like it would stab you with that point on the handle. Real bad thing for EDC.

i like the izula but seriously get the RC 3 serrated for AA school im taking a plain edge RC3 to JRTC. you have to remember the ropes your workin with are gonna be as thick as your forearm im a five jump chump and havent gotten a chance to go to AA school yet but when i went airborne i had an ontario RAT 3 on my molle and trusted it to slice thru a draggin chute so thats my basis for reccomendation. itll also serve you well on any ftx you might go thru without weighing you down, ftxs dont need bush craft as far as im concerned so the serrations will slice thru the toughest of mres just a thought :D

whats your MOS?

its great for edc tasks as well

I would get a Izula now and then get a Hest when its comes out, but that just me, lol.

Can't go wrong w/ the Izula I really like mine, I wish I could EDC it in Calif.

Right now im just a measly cadet... i do have an rc-4 already and i love it, just looking for something smaller to piggyback off of it

Between the two, I would say go with the Izula. I've been EDCing mine for two weeks now and it's a great little blade, and super sharp right out of the box. It's a pretty small blade, but in all honesty, I've found tasks that it's a little cumbersome for, so I wouldn't go for the HEST which looks to be a good bit larger. I've got an RC-4 and they would make a great pair, the 4 for thrashing and the Izula for finer work and such. Throw in a multitool and you'll be set. The small size of the Izula also makes it great to carry. It's unnoticeable pretty much anywhere you carry it. Also, remember that the Izula is available now and the HEST won't be out for some time. Well, I hope that made sense.

Good luck. Thanks for serving.

I don't like that point on the end of the HEST handle. Looks like it could hurt my hand, or stick me in the ass, when I least need it to.

Well Dont have a HEST, so it is kinda hard to judge. Like my Izula a lot, but find the handle a bit small, the HEST looks like it would be wider, and therefore easier to hold, once wrapped in paracord (and you guys said I couldnt write a run on sentence! :) )

One of the reasons I like my Gossman PSK so much, and I like the BK-11 is that once the handle is parawrapped, they fit so nicely in my hand.

That was my concern. I little grinding and re-powder coating and you could have this which is very appealing, to me at least.;)

I agree. ETA: Actually, I must say that I don't mind it that much. I see a use for it, but I'm just not 'in love' with it.

Izula!!! It is minimalist and light - all that a small, backup knife should be.

Complaints I have with the HEST: It is too big to fit the role of a "small" knife. I'd get an RC-3 before I got the HEST. Also, do we really need a bottle opener tool on a knife?? A bottle can be opened with almost ANYTHING!! The opener strikes me as an "armchair adventurer" add-on.

This is a little redundant here but there are degrees of minimalist knives. HEST is , although a minimalist type knife, still a little more versatile than the Izula because of the pry hook, bottle opener, storage container, etc.. Izula stops short of being the top to a tin can in minimalism giving only the cutting edge and a means to grip it, aka handle. The 'extras for the Izula come only as separate accessories and for the HEST it's extras are incorporated into the knife itself. Both knives carry our life time no-questions-asked warranty. You choose:) Mike
