My brother and I are planning a hiking out for our youth group and some of the urban kids who attend our church but don't usually mingle with the youth group. There are about 30 people total and we are hiking the beautiful Manistee River Trail in northwest Michigan. We are planning on packing in four 5 quart stock pots for making dinner and boiling water in the morning. The essential gear is coming from a few buddies of mine who hike with me. I have one MSR Shaker stove that will handle a pot of this size, but the other 3 stoves we have are MSR Pocket Rockets that mount directly unto the propane/butane fuel canister. These stoves are unstable and not sturdy enough to hold the weight of a full 5 quart pot. Does anybody make a cheap pot holder that will suspend the pot above the stove? Otherwise, has anyone here made one and are you willing to share your design with me?

This is the pot we are using:

Here is approximately what I am looking for, but on a smaller scale and collapsible (it should fit in the pot):

BBT's suggestion of using tent stakes is a good one. I've used that extensively while going ultralight but cooking for larger groups while mountain guiding. You can save money by getting aluminum gutter spikes (to save weight) or large nails/spikes from the hardware stores.

If you're in an area with a lot of rock you can use 3-4 large rocks as a pot stand (don't use river rocks as they could explode due to moisture in it). You can use 2 logs in a V-shape or parallel to each other as a pot stand. You can dig a slit trench to put your wood or stove in and use the sides of the ground as your stand (beware using a cartridge stove for this as I suppose it's possible that heat may build up to the point of explosion).

Another cheap option is to use a large coffee can as a pot stand. Cut breather holes all around near the top and a few near the bottom and voila! you have a pot stand (again this may not work with a cartridge stove like the Pocket Rocket without something like a remote stand attached). If you cut a large hole near the bottom you can also use it as a hobo stove and burn wood, pine cones, etc. in it.
