ok, i am looking for a new knife for my tackle box and or boat, i want it to be a fixed blade

I need it to be basically as rust proof as possible, as it will get next to no maintenance

I need it in a sheath that i can zip tie to my seat post (leaning seat, not a regular seat) next to my pliers, it will be there permanently so no leather, kydez or nylon

I dont want to spend more than 60 or 70 bucks, though if there is one that i really like i may go higher

I would like a blade that is at least 3.5 inches (it is just what i am comfortable with, i dont like using much shorter than that

so, what do you guys think?

Fresh water?

I'd just go with a stainless Mora; Craftline TopQ stainless is 4".

Even if it ever eventually does rust past usage, ~$15 to replace.

Salt water? I don't care what many claim, they'll all rust eventually with use and zero maintenance, with possible exception of "H1" steel.

It will accompany me to both salt and fresh, though the salt water will be slightly rare for the time being, if I am ever able to move back to South Louisiana it will see a lot of salt water

in salt water i would probably wipe the majority off, but not like i should

i like the idea of a mora now that i see it, at that price i could get a few, and keep one out and open to the elements until i dropped it in the water or rust got it

now then, just so that i can make sure about the knives, any more brands etc???

gotta agree with shoot -the mora should fit the OP criteria, except for maybe the sheath part. But "no leather, kydez or nylon" makes it pretty limiting. Maybe some kinda of wood bracket with a slot in it for the knife.
You can see commercial variations in both wood and plastic at most places that sell boat stuff

A stainless Mora is my boat knife in fresh or salt. If it gets dropped over the side, $12-15 will get me a new one.

ok, since everyone is recomending moras, i am gonna get one of them....are there any stores that i can get them from or do i have to order them?

i recommend the mora companion MG stainless, i got mine at baryonyxknife.com

p.s. for the price, you can buy two of them and you'll have a spare.

I never see them in any stores here. Ragnar's Forge at:

Is a popular place to score online.

This is the one I'm holding in my hand right now, that seems would be a good choice for you. (one with "clear" sheath out of stock, seems to have it with the black sheath).

"#11201: The Craftline Allround is a general purpose knife. The Sandvik stainless blade is about 3 7/8" long, 13/16" wide and .098" (2.5 mm) thick. It has the usual Mora Scandinavian grind, and is hardened to about 57 on the Rockwell scale. This would be an excellent knife for any outdoor activity, from hiking and canoeing, to dressing deer and small game. The knife and sheath weigh only 4 ounces. $14. Out of stock, see #11900 below.

#11900; It's also available with a black sheath. $14"

Or the one mentioned above by jimnolimit, I'm sure it's fine too.

i don't know how the handle feels on the craftline, but the companion's handle is very grippy, the rubber has a great feel to it. in the grand scheme of things, i doubt the OP could go wrong with either model.

On the higher end of the spectrum is the Fallkniven F2. I use the knife for hunting and fishing, but admitedly I've never stuck it's VG-10 blade in salt water. It has a nice basic rubbery and grippy handle, razor sharp, and can fillet Ok, but also cut through tough scales and cartilage. I field dressed a big buck I shot last weekend with it, and it cut through ribs like they were butter. Comes with a half nylon/half kydex sheath that would be perfect for just zip tying to your boat. You could even cut off the nylon on the upper end, since it's only for a belt loop.

The two knives I automatically take with me when I head out fishing are a Mora stainless and a spyderco pacific salt folder - both do a great job!
