Guys, I've had this pair of Merrills for about 7 years and the front rubber, "skid plate" has come loose. What glue would everybody reccomend?
Thanks ahead of time.

I wish I had heard of this before I lost the toe on my ASICS.

OP, please report your findings and results! Hope you fix it.

I'd say new shoes. Once stuff like that starts blowing up all the other parts are going to be wearing.

I am very guilty of overworking outdoor shoes. Now is the time to buy since almost every retailer has summer shoes on sale.

Have to agree. I've had very good experience with Merrels, but if you've had them for seven years, they've paid for themselves ten times over.. Besides, the footbed is probably compressed beyond its lifespan - even if you continually replaced insoles.

Reminds me, I have a pair that has held up for over 10 years now, that I really should replace.

I promise you if you use this and follow the directions it will never come off again. I use it for leather crafting. You can pick it up at home depot or if your not in California this is the best I have ever used20191113_133826.jpg
Just make sure you use them in a well ventilated area. I have to have the barge shipped to my winter home in Mexico. Wink. California doesn't like it.

Thanks everybody and I prolly should of added that this is my spare pair that I use to beat around the house in. I have replaced them already but I don't want to mow the grass in those.

Uncle Timbo Uncle Timbo make sure you clean the area up very well. Make sure it is dry. And make sure to scuff both sides the rubber and the leather side before using either product. And once you press the rubber to the toe take something to hammer it down. The back side of a hammer handle works well. 5-10 minutes set time before pressing the two pieces together is about the right time. I would use a couple toothpicks to keep.it from free forming while the cement gets tacky.

I was gonna agree about replacing them, but as a yardwork pair, the aforementioned glues will work.

Most boot and athletic shoes use an Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) based foam for their midsoles. This is an open cell foam, and as mentioned above, compresses over time. This in spite of added technologies that don't compress, or take longer.

The upside is you don't have to break them in like polyurethane. But once broken in, poly can be great like in my SAS shoes.

Sold shoes for 5 years in high school and college, been obsessed since lol...

That's what my 10 y/o ones are for... LOL Mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, sealing the driveway, and all kinds of nasty stuff. I'm always impressed with how well Merrels hold up over the long term. For the price you pay compared to an Asolo, Lowa, etc, they are probably the best bang for your buck value out there.

I agree about how long these things last. I have a newer pair of ventilators that I've been wearing this summer and fall which I'll be putting in the closet to drag out my MOAB's w/Gortex for wintertime wear here in Ohio.
There was no way I'm going to pitch these old Merrill's because my skid plate came loose. That's the ONLY thing noticeably wrong with them. I'm sold on them.

Don’t feel bad. I’m wearing (at least) 15 y/o running shoes around the house —and to certain places—when I can’t go barefoot. (Heck, some people run barefooted or with minimalist footwear.)
I’m amazed —and grateful—the laces haven’t died. Nearly wore holes in the tops of both and plan to continue using until who knows. Very practical for many things IMO.

Not everyone agrees about the value of “support” in shoes versus healthy feet and body mechanics—correct gait. So enjoy those babies.

I'll reply here when these Merrills officially, Bite the Dust.
If this isn't a testimonial to go out and buy some...
