Hello and Help,

Need help to identify components (software and hardware) to connect the new JVC camcorder that I got from L6Steel. I can copy the still pictures to a PC but I made some videos of some knife testing and want to copy the video to the PC so I can create Windows Media or Quicktime file formats.

Ultimately, I want to create a DVD that incorporates these movies and still pictures. Please let me know you thoughts and what I need to read, review and or purchase.

Thanks in advance.

Most (digital camcorders) have either a USB or Firewire output that you can use to connect to your computer. I use a Firewire (1394 IEEE) cable to connect from my Sony MiniDV (TRV70) to my laptop. The software I use is the one that comes with Windows XP--Movie Maker--which converts to Windows Media files.

We would need to know more specifics about the camcorder and the PC and what you intend to do with the video footage (disc, or email - makes a big difference).

There are great video editors out there, but the least expensive of the "good ones" starts at about $100. Movie Maker is very basic and may fit what you need, though.

I've used Avid on direct-to-disc recordings that were large enough resolution to fill a big screen High-Def TV. But for email purposes, I rely on Stoik Video Compressor. It's free and takes just a minute to compress.

ZG's right about the Firewire - it's the best way to rip the video off your camera.
