Found a couple wood stumps on the side of the road, unsure the type of wood. Thought I would turn them into a side table or stool but after sawing off a couple inches from each end, both stumps have soft, cork like centers.
Anyone know if these are salvageable or is this rot going to eventually take over?

Where are you located? Im pretty good with wood types near my region.
Shot in the dark: dawn redwood has a light 'corky' feel. Lousy for anything but firewood.

The wood in the middle is spalted/rotten,whatever type it is. Maybe a neat looking pattern but you would have to seal the surface with some kind of acrylic/C.A. to stabilize. Probably wouldn't spread any further once it's stabilized.--KV
