Hey guys,

So I'm looking to get a knife for my 72 hour bag which will stay in my car. Its a maxpedition versipack and Ive got all my supplies picked out but I can't decide on a knife.

I bought an ESEE 6 and Molle for it but I think the knife is a little bit thin to be my one survival fixed blade in a life or death situation. Also I really like and think it would be an awesome hiking knife due to its light weight and want to use it, no have it sit in my car for eternity. I am extremely Impressed by the Molle backing and ordered another one off ebay and will fit it to whatever knife I get. I also have a mini grip in the bag for intricate work so I want a little bit bigger knife.

So here are the options,
Im leaning towards getting a fallkniven A-1 right now. I have only owned one fallkniven knife, the TOR and am really impressed by the quality. I'm also a sucker for thick knives and .24 is IMO the perfect thickness for a survival knife. What I don't like is that the sheath sucks so I would have to get a custom made. Also its 160 some dollars.

Next I'm considering the ESEE 5, I like it but think it may be a bit short.

Finally Im looking at a Regulator, thick as can be and not very expensive but looks like a clunker.

Give me some advice! Thanks!

My first choice would be a Buck Nighthawk. Plenty thick and reasonably priced. If it was strickly for BOB duty I wouldn't spend alot. On the other hand if you are gonna pull it out and use it regularly, head over to the Busse forum and get something that will definately survive the apocolypse. They are expensive and you'll cry if it gets stolen out of your car but I can't seem to harm mine.

I have serveral nice busse kin knives, M9, RMD, 2 dogfathers, but I don't think they'd be ideal do to weight. I almost bought an ash the other day but didn't want to bring my bank account so low. I should have bought it, it was at 300.

Check out the Scrap Yard Regulator, I love mine and cannot imagine a situation it would not be able to handle. Plus, it is lighter than my skinny ASH.

You don't need a long or thick knife for survival.

I keep a Mora in my car bag, it works for everything that you can use a knife for, and is worth about $12.

I keep the expensive ESEE-3 on my belt...

I have a mora in my car bag too, I'm more concerned about having my car broken into and losing a sweet blade along with other gear. My GHB,BOB,Car bag whatever you want to call it is full of gear that can get the job done but doesn't cost much at all.

edit: I dont think the ESEE 6 should be referred to as too thin for any job...

The BM 515 was my choice after some thought. I posted about it here if you're interested, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9118705#post9118705
Of course, I can change my mind if a better option comes along. ;)

If I'm only going to carry one knife in my B.O.B , it isn't going to be a Mora. Good knives I guess, but not the only thing I want to be carrying when SHTF.
I want something more substantial in case I have to pry , punch out a window , defend myself. If I'm evac-ing , I don't know what I'm going to face. A stout 5-7" blade is my rec. Esee 5,6 , BK-2 ,BK-7 , A1 , SRK , SOG Team Elite, etc. The Esee 5 is a good length and bomb-proof;same with the BK-2 if you want to spend less or afraid of theft. BK-2 sits in my pack.
Ultimate decision is yours. See what other people pack and check out some vids on you tube.

I have 2 BOB bags, one in the house and one in my truck. The one in my truck has a Victorinox OHT and Ontario TAK and the one in the house has a Ontario Pilot Survival knife and another Vic OHT. I feel those knives to be all I need if the SHTF.

I think you'd find the 5 a pretty heavy item in your BOB and quit frankly, if I found myself Bugging out, the 5 would be a knife I'd have closer to hand. I think the ESEE 4 or 3 makes the perfect BOB knive (I'm a big ESEE fan)...Buck Nighthawk noted above too I think. I, personally, have a stainless Moras and the now discontinued ESEE version of the HEST in my BOB plus a leatherman and a SAK.

I am of the mind about a primary knive as I am with a firearm. The knife and the gun belong on your hip!

You might think about a axe as well. You said its going into the car, what if you come across a down tree in the way that you cant drive around? Something to think about. I know in my truck i keep a a Becker BK-9, and a Spyderco endura for the small and skinning work, and a single sided axe in behind the seat. You know just in case...... :D

I think I'm down to the regulator and the A-1. I want a big knife with a lot of bite. Just can't decide on which one... Guess I'll just have to get both :)

The ESEE-6 is plenty thick enough. The old pioneers used much thinner knives and did quite well! Some were butcher knives.

Im kind of leaning towards the regulator after thinking about it today. If there is a steel that Im going to trust my life to Its going to be SR 77 not Lam VG 10. But then again that funky handle may get it the way. Ah decisions decisions.

I own many a swamp rat but none that fit the bill. the closest would be my RMD but thats my hunting knife and its too small. Maybe Ill give the A-1 a try. I was pretty set on the regulator but after watching the destruction test I am very very impressed by the A1
