A buddy of mine has emigrated overseas and was recently accepted for a civilian militia/patrol group. He'll be involved about 4-6 days a month. He wants a fixed blade, something better than Ontario or Kabar, but under $125.
Not sure on length, wants easy access, something sturdy enough for utility but effective as back-up weapon. I know he likes G10 or something grippy, no serrations. Not much humidity (mideast) but it does rain during the winter.
That's about it, any suggestions appreciated.

OK, I know you said "no serrations" but I have to push the SOG SEAL Knife. This is tough as nails and solid like a brick. I recomend this knife 100%. It is made for hardcore combat and that's it. They also have a new sheath for it which is pretty impressive.
Another thought from SOG is a factory second of one their bowies. Check them out at Sogknives.com. They are knocked back enough that they should be right in that pricerange.

If he can stretch a few more dollars, a Strider WP is a great carry. I love mine. His price range makes available a whole world of nice producion knives and also some customs. I would have him check out a site like Knifeart.com, where the assortment can be searched by dollar value. You'll be surprised how many customs fit into his dollar amount.

Swamp Rat Knife Works "Howling Rat" sounds like a winner to me. 4" blade, tough as nails, inexpensive, comfortably grippy handle. It's not stainless, but it is coated. A little care in the rain and it would be fine.

Dave, since I guess he's not a knife guy himself, he'll want something particularly comfortable to carry and use. The Swamp Rats are ideal for this. The prices are reasonable and if the Bog Dog, Bandicoot, or Howling Rat are too small, they have larger and much larger.

But especially to begin with, yes, a 4.5" blade is extremely utilitarian, as a larger blade would not be. He wants this for "go" and not for "show"!

I have their hatchet. The handle is a soft composite, but very durable and shock-absorbing. The blade is all but indestructible and the edge holds up even on hard wood.

The Gryphon M30A1 (middle knife in the picture that T. Erdelyi posted above) would be an excellent choice, as would a Camillus CUDA CQB-1 or a Cold Steel Tanto.

Nah, go traditional with a WWII-style khukuri. HI has them on for half-price right now! This is an amazingly strong tool/prybar that, incidentally, can also lop someone's head off after cutting down a tree or two. There's a reason the Ghurkas used them for pretty much everything requiring a sharp edge.

And you never heard this from me, but they open tin cans and chop potatoes like nothing. :)

I bet a compact, ordinary, unobtrusive style will go over much better on a part-time neighborhood patrol than some overheated combat cutlery better suited to hard use by trained frontline personnel. Who will rarely use it for anything but bragging rights, anyway.

We forgot to mention, Dave -- make sure he has a multitool!

You might look at the Becker Knife and Tool selection.

The BK&T 7 is a very nice knife for the price.

I second the multitool recommendation. I can't imagine spending a day in the city without my Leatherman Wave, never mind on a patrol group.

WOW! Some excellent suggestions! Thanks to all. No, he's not really a knife guy save for the old Gin1 Delica I gave him (silly me) in 1995. They give him an "IBM 12-43" (yes, that is correct) carbine and/or a "Choate-Toole Underwood IMI " .30 cal carbine. I'm not familiar with either , to be honest. I'm assuming they are relatives of the M1 based on the pics he sent me. Plus they give him 30 rounds of ammunition, some shooting tests (has to hit 8 out of 10 @ 50 meters) and, of course , a strict background check.

I'll forward the suggestions. Any others are welcome as well.

Two Cold Steel SRK seconds @ $49.99 each, plus an SAK that he'll actually use 99.9% of the time...

I would recommend a Spyderco Perrin (FB04), which is much more versatile than the SOGs while remaining lightweight and unobtrusive. And he won't have to wait 6 months to get it, unlike a knife from Swamp Rat ;)

Ah so he's going to be in "Mishmor Ezrachi" (Lit. citizens watch, acts as an auxilary police force in Israel). He he, he'd better not show up w/ anything too big or they'll kick him out for being too "rambo."

So while he harrasess the local populance with his support for the Police state, I reccomend he go for something 5", and that's considered big.

The carbine belongs to the Junta/ state, and he won't be able to take it home.

No Tzvi, he has to return the carbine in the morning to lockup.

Since you don't like the "Junta" there's always the Galut, you're just who it's designed for, why not try living there instead? Leave it to the Lunatic Left to spoil a pleasant thread.....

Oh, and by the way, I'm not aware of him "harrassing" anyone. There was , however, an Arab shooting attack at an automobile not too far from Brosh, in the South, one of those oh so many 'little' attacks that rarely get mentioned in the mainstream press.Where those pesky missles fly over sometime from Fatahland.
But why defend yourself, right?

The Gryphon Boot (first knife pictured of three pictured) is overall best choice, IMHO.

Well designed, well made, right price, available near immediately, reliable source (Cutlery Shoppe), good sheath.

In trained hands it is superb CQB blade; and will handle daily utilitarian needs nicely.

It can be carried on and off duty / and easily tucked away from curious eyes, both friend and foe.

Have carried and used one for a number of years now - and have mine with me presently in an environment considered fairly hostile / aggressive.

Politics aside - best of luck and good fortune to your friend.

Diam Dave You are plain wrong.

One of your pals "big jobs" will be to take ANY knife away from Jew or Arab alike.

There is ZERO "Rule of law" in Israel, only what is convinient for the Gov.

If you think I'm wrong I suggest you come over and find out for yourself. ( a good place to start would be to read Israel's "Decleration of (in?)Dependence"

Secular "Zionisim" = Galut! The ultimate "galut" is when in your own land the Torah is supressed, it's leaders killed, and the populance put into fear of even "passive resistance".

Galut prevails in Eretz Yisroel. Exile is a "condition" as well as a "location".

Tell the Jews of Gaza that "we have arrived", tell the Jews of Judea and Shomron, the Golan that the Anti-Torah state is the anshai KENESET hagdolah.

Tell the Jews the State now wants to Uproot from their land that this is GEULAH.

Secular Zionisim has proven itself a fraud.

I live/ed, served, and sweated to find out the truth.

Shooting and missile attacks (that you are correct to say "don't make the news) are a symptom of the states inability to protect its citizens. "Medinat Yisrael" is a Servant to it's masters. The Secular-humanist state has chosen to serve man rather than God.

That is why your misguided freind had better not stand out of the sheep fold too much. Israeli Citizens can't own IBM carbines or ANY rifle (or shogun etc.). And darned few can even get a personal handgun. Knives are qausi Legal...as long as the Cops (like you friend) don't snaggle you with one on the street.
