Question: Would 2 Sportsman 2 lockbacks made a few years apart have slight different plunge grind locations, slight variations in length of blade and even slightly different surface finish on the blade? These would be early to mid eighties in particular.

I have seen Gerber counterfeits advertised but I've only seen one in person and the lack of finish was unmistakable on that. These knives are both finished to a high level and function the same. Internal finish is the same. They are both "V" steel BTW.

Sorry I can't provide pictures. Thanks.

Hi Joe, all I know is Gerber was acquired by Fiskars in 1986.

Plenty of room there for all sorts of mayhem.

Yes, what you question is possible. But really, why are you worried about it? Those are not expensive, difficult to come by, nor especially collectible.

Thanks for your help. Vascowear models are going for between $1-200 for very good condition. That is still a bunch of money to a lot of people.I have seen fakes advertised on the net so I wanted to check.

Not here. Before the days you could go online and bid on ebay it took me well over a decade to get a decent V steel model looking locally and on the gun show circuit. I finally found one through another dealer who brought me one to the next show from home. On Ebay they come up once every few months so if they are easy to find there you could probably sell a few for profit.

eisman is right... the Pacific Northwest is great for picking up vintage Gerber stuff.

Counterfeits of old Gerber models? I wouldn't expect it at all, but wouldn't be surprised all the same.

Up here in The Pacific Northwest you also see the occasional "lunch box special" knife that found its way out of the factory. A few years back now, I've run across a few older MK2's with no serial number on them. Someone may have put together some knives from less than perfect blade blanks.

I haven't seen a Vascowear model for many years. I would think one in nice condition should be worth at least $150.

I ran across a website a few years ago selling them. It had all the old models listed including V steel, The M2 walnut handled lockback, all the Sportsmen. I found it while looking for V steel models. I have no experience with them or ordering from that site and I wouldn't give them the pleasure of listing them or their address here. I really dislike that sort of business.

Pretty good estimate for used, less than perfect examples. Even the poor condition ones do well.
