1. small EDC Folder
2. small self defense fixed-blade (just for the collection)

Both shouldnt be more than 50.- Euro (how much is that in Dollar?) and hopefully on this website: www.wolfster.de

Until now I was eyeing the following knifes:
- Byrd Robin
- Gerber Trendy
- Gerber Truss
- Spyderco Dragonfly

For the fixed-blade I found the following:
- CRKT Side Hawg
- CRKT Fixed Falcon
- Smith & Wesson Neck Knife, Zytel, Blk Tanto Blade
- Colt Mini Guardian

Any more ideas on advice? I am a real greenhorn when it comes to knifes since I only recently started to find this hobby highly interesting.

you should consider a karambit style knife for self defense... or better yet, a can of oc spray. take care.

Thanks for the reply.
As I mentioned before, the so called "self defense" knife is merely for my collection, I won't have it on me. For real "self defense", I'll rely on my feet, brain and, worse-case-scenario, a little kubotan. :)

Already got a karambit style knife from S&W. Pretty nice although the fancy talon-like design is also its major flaw since it narrows down your basic techniques/movements (if you are an Filipino Martial Arts student, this might be the opposite of course).

Get you a Spyderco Yojimbo or one of the Waved Spydercso Enduras.

i know that prices for a decent knife in europe are high.. too high. i walked into a few shops in stuttgart, paris and amsterdam and the prices made me laugh. the going price for a boker magnum was around €50 euros and one place tried selling me a benchmade benchmite for €350 !!! i couldn't believe it... in any case whatever knife you get i suggest that you order one from here... i know someone that will ship to you and maybe even give a good discount...email me for the site. take care.

order from here and get a good spyderco delica or calypso jr....cant go wrong...high quality...quality steel

Gerber used to produce some pretty decent knives, but their reputation has taken some hits over the last few years. Spyderco is consistantly rated as one of the best manufacturers. Byrd is a lower-cost line from Spyderco, but they are still given good marks for overall quality.

I'd pick the Dragonfly myself. It's a classic time-proven design, essentially a scaled-down Endura and Delica.

Of those you listed I would get the Dragonfly…but for EDC I’d prefer a Calypso Jr., 'tho the current ZDP version is a little more than $50.

I would suggest a Spyderco Temperance fixed blade for your collection, if nothing else it makes a great kitchen knife (also more than $50 but worth saving up for).

PS - Almost forgot - the Camillus Arclite is a great little fixed blade that is well within your price range.

I won't pick a SD knife cause I don't know much when it comes to that. For a small EDC user I'd say go with the Dragonfly. If you're open to other things the Cricket is nice and thin and very useful. A nice small gents knife if you're willing to spend a tad more is the Kopa. Very elegant and have VG-10, a big bonus.

Seems that Spyderco is a very famouse brand around here. I might go for the dragonfly then, not sure about the fixed blade yet.

Yojimbo etc. is still way out of my league, although I have the money, I am not willing to spend so much Euros for knifes since you can find decent and good looking ones for low cash (Byrd for example).

I'm not really sure if buying from the US is such a good idea. Higher shipping cost (not to forget the Visa cost too) will give the price a nice bump, ergo price-wise no difference between buying here or at your place.

But please, to PM me the website.

Edit:
Ok, I just checked some prices, if I buy from the US, I do save some Euros. Now thats good news. :-)

Darn, Search function still doesnt work, ergo my question concerning the fixed-blade is still open.

I am in no way disagreeing with the previous posts. My Gerber Truss 2.0 has served me very well, holds an edge well and I like the leaf spring type lock on the knife which turns it from a folder into a basic fixed blade. Carry it open, concealed in high risk situations. Seems to be an all round good guy. It's small enough to be socially acceptable, yet is stout enough to inflict proper wounds if needed.
