hello all, newbie here. I'm really wanting to begin forging knives after reading gobs of books, articles,posts,threads...etc. and attending a couple of knife shows and hammer-ins, and in general making a nuisance of myself to anyone locally with more knowledge than me on the subject. And until I can get the time and money to attend the ABS school, I want to spend some time just experimenting with how the metals will move under a hammer when heated. Only problem. No forge! Any suggestions on which one to get? $500.00 or less(preferably less, I'm just a poor Ssgt.) please help!

A Whisper Low Boy forge (NC Forge Co.)works well and is portable. It costs right at $500-550There are other similar forges available, too.

If you want a propane forge, I'd say go look at IG's site, I hear it's a pretty good design. Even if you want coal or charcoal, I'd suggest building your own too, it'll be much cheaper and most likely better for your purposes then most you could buy. Most forges you can buy ready made are designed for farriers(horseshoe smiths), which isn't an efficient design for blades.

me again. IG the forge plans look simple enough, but only problem is I can't weld for beans. Nor do I have access to a welder. I have been looking at some forges on ebay and came across one from diamondback ironworks, Sorry, I don't know how to attach their website to my post. Heck, I can barely tie my shoes! Anyway, the price on their forges seem pretty good but I don't know if it will run hot enough to weld, or indeed even if it is a good forge. If anyone has any info on the subject i'd appreciate it.

Bro!!!! call a local welding shop to see if they will weld it up if you pikup all the parts. It still should come out cheaper than buying one. Good Luck.
If you lived up here we could do it up.

Hey Linkshande, if that doesn't work gather up everything and bring it to Uvalde and I'll help you. Probably won't take long at all. If you have the kaowool we can put that in to.

I really appreciate that! I take stock of the financial thing come payday and then go from there. By the by, how far is that from san antonio?:
