I just purchased the 3" drive pully for my single speed Bader 3.I got the set screw out of the 6" pully and am trying to prise the pully off using two prise bars.

Is there any trick to getting it off? So far I'm probably being too easy as I don't want to bend the shaft.

Will a pully puller fit? It just doesn't look like there is enough clearence to get the pully puller arms between the back of the pully and the frame.I haven't tried the pully puller yet because I'll have to buy or rent one.

I have had good luck with penetrant and two screwdriveds when I have had to change drive wheels.

You may need a puller. doubt you could bend the motor shaft...

a pulley puller would be best, its possible to bend a motor shaft, happened to me before. not something easy to fix. you can make your own puller with some thick angle iron, bolts and some welding.

I made a special set of little prybars for this, very thin, just enough to get behind the wheel then pry it off. when you do get it of, run the motor without the pulley on, holding some fine grit paper or scotch brite to the shaft, then grease it with good grease before fitting the new pulley, this will make life easier when you want to change them again.

Hey R.H....

It's been a while since I looked at a drive wheel on a Bader. Does the drive wheel have threaded holes in it like the ones above and below the center hub on my Square Wheel drive wheel (pictured)? If it does, those can bee used for pulling the wheel in the same manner as a steering wheel puller works. I'd be happy to explain how to make a puller if your wheel is setup for it. You'd just need some stout iron stock, either flat, angle or what have you, in about 1/4" thickness, 3 bolts that work in the threads on the drive wheel holes, a drill, and an appropriately sized male threader (same size and pitch as the 3 bolts).

Let me know and I'd be happy to walk you through it.

Rick

Put some penetrating oil on the shaft. Wait about 1/2 hour. Take a wooden mallet and give the pulley a sharp rap at 0-180-90-270. Then give it a good whack directly on the shaft. It should then pop off pretty easily. If it is still tight, heat the pulley with a torch all around the shaft ( but not the shaft) until the oil smokes and the pulley is too hot to grasp for more than a second ( about 200-250F). Have someone apply gentle pressure from the back ( like you have been) while you whack the shaft. This usually has it pop right off. If that doesn't do it - buy a new VS Bader and sell this one on ebay.

Thanks for the help everyone.I am going to try a pully puller Mon.I asked our local Autozone about different size pully pullers and they have a rental -borrow program where I pay for the puller but when I bring it back I get all my money refunded.

Rick
I really appreciate the offer to help but the wheel is solid.I'm going to see if one of the pullers from AutoZone will work before I try to rig one. With their rental -borrow program ,at least I'm not out $40 if I can't get it to fit.
