Need Advice On India Stag Crown

I have a couple of stag crowns that have those ugly white cut-off bumps near the butt. I can't risk burning them, so do I file, belt-sand with a fresh 50 grit and perhaps dip in water or possibly belt sand 80%, file 20%? Most importantly, how do I color or dye to have it match the rest of the piece (very dark brown)?

BTW, the large importer of india stag to the knife suppliers mentioned in "Blade" mag. said they're now out, but they expect a decent shipment in 6 to 8 weeks.

Thanks in advance.

All stag crowns have that sawn off spot. That's where one of the small tines was. Most makers just sand it smooth so it doesnt scrape your hand, but some have dyed it to match the rest of the stag.

I sand it off and polish it too. I always rub kiwi brown shoe polish in to it with the rest of the stag. Heat the stag up on the stove while rubbing it in until it flows and takes on a deeper color. Works for me. Bruce
