Hello, I have posted a knife I wanted to sell on a forum. I got a PM from a person who joined the same day that i posted the thread. He PMed me expressing interest so I sent him a PM to call me. He sounds like the age he stated ( being retired) and he states he wants it for a small collection. There is really nothing wrong except the join date and no actual posts except for a PM. He paypalled me already as well. Is there a way I can get scammed here ??. Im sending the blade out USPS priority with insurance and sig confirmation. Any insight into this matter would be appreciated.--Thank You Mark

A tip about using Paypal for selling knives....once you receive the money in your paypal account...transfer that money to your bank account, then when it gets there, REMOVE it and put it somewhere else! ONLY when that is accomplished should you send out the knife. For Paypal, I have a separate bank account, at a different bank than all my other accounts. Remember that Paypal not only has the ability to freeze your actual paypal account, they can also get to the bank account that you have associated with paypal.

It's likely that the buyer is legit, but with all the scams being used these days, you need to protect yourself as best you can.

Keep the paperwork. If there is a problem that is all you need to make sure paypal is happy. Ed has some great points. Paypal can and will take the money back from your account. If you have any Credit Cards on your account they will go after them if they can't get the $$ from the bank account.

Thanks Ya'll--if paypal wanted to get the money back-wouldnt they demand the item be returned in its original state? If he doesnt like it, I have no problems refunding him.- as long as I get it back.I had heard , on some thread, that somehow the person got the item, kept it, and still got paypal to refund him...Is that possible? I looked up paypal rules and regs and it seemed pretty much buyer based,, but what right does the seller have if an item is not returned-or returned damaged. Thanks-Mark--I appreciate all the feedback--Marekz

The big thing with paypal is they want to see the paper trail. If you send the item to the verified address and have either a signature conformation or delivery conformation they are happy that you did your part. Once the item is received then it is up to the purchaser to get it back to you with the same paper trail. Usually the horror stories are caused by someone not keeping track of the package and not requiring a signature or sending it to a non verified address. I have had to request payal to step in one time and they refunded my $$ for a non received item. The seller was under investigation from many complaints. If you do as Ed suggested and have a totally separate account for your paypal you can prevent some of the issues. Unfortunately there are always PITA buyers and sellers that will cause problems even f things go smoothly. Just represent the item accurately send pictures t the buyer and you should be fine. Keep all your emails and all you mail receipts and delivery conformation paperwork. This will go a long way to keeping your money.
