I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have several resources for parts and meterial's, but would like to use others trial and error to save some time. I know I need an electric motor, wheels, and belt but not sure of the small details involved.

What kind of belt speed is commonly used?
What HP motor should I use? I plan to make 4"-6" fixed blade's more then anything to practice techniques.
What to use for wheels?
Do I need a spring tentioner?

Thanks

Hi Bill,
As far as the belt speed goes my drive wheel is 3." in diameter on a 3470 rpm motor.
My first motor was a 1.5 HP Pool motor that lasted 6 years before it loaded up with grinding grit and fried.
I Changed to the same size motor but used a Total Enclosed Fan Cooled motor of the same speed and Hp.
My machine has a weight controlled "dancing arm"
If I ever improve it it will be with a spring controlled tensioner with a tracking device.
I had access to a 8" wide rubber roller at 70 Durometer. so I machined 3 rollers out of it and reground the OD to true the concentric again.
I would recommend purchasing your rollers. Mine were fun to make but took time to manufacture.
I would also use a ceramic platen. Well worth the money.
Have a Good Day:thumbup:

the NWG with 4 step pulleys works good for me.
If i did another it would be the grinder in a box.

i made my 2x72 belt sander and if you have access to a lathe and a mill you can make a simple belt sander cheap. i only do flat or convex grinds so my contact wheel is just over 4". send me an email and i'll send you pictures of it. i have dimensions wrote down on the pieces. rje196021@gmail.com
