I got a mule from Spyderco and am going to make my own wooden scales. However I don't know how to fix the scales to the blade. I see some mules with brass pieces of metal holding them together, no screwheads or anything. How does that work? Where can I get the stuff to do this?

In most custom knives the scales are ultimately attached with epoxy. Bolts or rivets can be used, and they help to hold the scales on while the epoxy cures. Rivets are sometimes actually hammered so they expand and lock the scales on, sometimes they are just held on with epoxy like the scales are.

Knives with actual bolts holding the scales on will sometimes not use any adhesive, just the bolts to hold the scales on. You can buy scales already made for the mules that you just bolt on, and many outdoor/survival knives such as Beckers just bolt the scales on.

There are knifemaker supply companies that sell the various bolts and pin materials, or if you want just pins you can buy brass or steel at your local hardware store. I have used the bolts and I have also used brass rod.
