For the first time in a while, I've got some knife money. Woo-hoo!!! As I recently LOST my EDC (Gerber Applegate/Fairbairn Covert folder), I need replacement(s).

I've got about $120 to spend, so trying to squeeze everything out of my knife-buying dollars. I think I want two blades ... one self-defense folder, and one sheeple-friendly folder. I'm thinking of the Kershaw Leek for the everyday-use blade, but can't decide on the self-defense folder. With the prices I've found on the Leek, that leaves me with about $90 for the self-defense folder.

Currently, I'm considering the SOG Pentagon Elite or Pentagon Elite II (my wife has the SOG Vision, and I'm very impressed with their blades). Also, I'm looking at the CRKT Crawford/Kasper folder or the Crawford/Kasper Pro, in addition to the Spyderco Civilian (which I can just squeak into my budget on a good EBay day.)

Do y'all have any other suggestions for the self-defense folder? I might be swayed on the sheeple-friendly folder, as well (though probably not), but I certainly welcome any input on that choice, as well!!!

Save up another $20 to add on to the $90 you will have after buying the Leek, and get a BM 806D2. Excellent knife, and designed by ex-Navy Seal Chris Carracci specifically for that purpose as the name implies: Advanced Folding Combat Knife. Or, better yet, go ahead and buy the 806D2 with your money, and use it as an EDC knives for both uses, and save up for a Leek for minor cutting.

Maybe it is because I live in Canada, but I haven't known sheeple to be terribly comfortable around the speedsafe knives. I showed my brother-in-law my Chive and the first words out of his mouth were, "That is a weapon!" Switch-bladey stuff makes the sheeple around here jumpy!

EDC Sheeple proof blade I'd personally reccomend the Spyderco Endura it's just a hell of an all around blade and will double more than well as a back up SD blade. I'd second the CRKT Kasper as a solid SD Blade but personally my CRKT Folder went all wonky on me (loosened up within three months and I'm still not happy about it) I'd still suggest the fixed blade version of that knife though.
On the SD line up I would suggest
an Emmerson La Griffe
A Spyderco Perrin
For low budget the BOSS series of knives looks promising but if you're into knife politics you might want to abstain from that line up.
My vote would be pretty much anything Spyderco or Cold Steel The blade doesn't really matter as much as the person using it I'd say.
Pick one you're comfortable with.

a SAK or small slip joint for the sheeple and a Spyderco Ayoob for a defensive folder? The Ayoob is discontinued but there should still be a few around.

What he said - but screw saving the extra $20 and get a SAK Electrician and the 806 - great combo.

If you're dead set on the Leek then go for a Benchmade TSEK - a better value is hard to find in knives right now (Axis lock, 440C, G-10 scales, great ergo's etc...)

I gotta go with Chad and Medic and say BM 806D2. You can pick up a sheeple friendly piece at Wally World such as an Old Timer stockman pattern that will be a constant user and the carbon steel blades will be relatively easy to sharpen. For the money the 806 is a great piece.

I don't know what the Al Mar SERE 2000 is selling for but if it is in the same price range I would definately give it a look!!

I am going to second the Ayoob folder for defense. Serrated. It is very thin, and a well built knife. For a sheeple friendly knife, consider a spyderco toad. It is one of the ones that I regret selling. Also, consider a slipjoint. A nice congress knife or trapper would serve you well.

I'd like to suggest a possible "one knife" solution.

A Kershaw Boa with the multi-colored anodizing is surprisingly friendly-looking, but it has all the characteristics of a first-class defensive knife. The Boa's recurve blade shape is also one of the most versatile utility designs around.

The Boa has a blade of 440V, textured aluminum scales, and steel liners. It features the Speed Safe assisted-opening mechanism and an "index trigger" that allows ambidextrous opening. The "trigger" becomes an impressive lower guard when the knife is open. There's even a lock to insure that the knife stays closed, although no one I know of actually uses it. :p

I can't help you with the defensive blade, but for the second knife, there are a lot of choices:

Victorinox Tinker - Two useful blades, plus a few tools. Light and flat.

Victorinox Electrician/Pioneer/Soldier - Sturdy Alox handles.

Leatherman Micra/Squirt - Scissors often come in handy and are the ultimate friendly cutting tools. Also very appealing even to non-knife knuts, so a good conversation starter on knives.

Spyderco Jester - Quite useful for its size, great design.
