I am new to this forum and I was looking for some advice. I have about $100-150 to spend on a new knife. I am looking for a new folder. I was leaning toward a Spyderco ATR, Kris or maybe an Al Mar Sere 2000--I am not limiting myself to a certain brand or style. What in your opinion is a wise use of that money? What would you get?

Well we can help you a lot more if you give us a bit more info. Are you looking for a new knife to keep nib and look at? Or are you looking for a new knife to edc? Also, are you partial to any blade styles like tanto's or drop points? Do you like recurves? How do you feel about serrations? What kind of materials/steels do you like?

100-150 IMO i'd go fixed blade. In the 50-100 range you can find great folders, but that all depends on what you're using the knife for.

I am looking for something for occasional carry. As far as blade styles- prefer a drop point or a tanto, but like I said I was considering the Kris so I am not ruling anything out. Looking for a plain blade or possibly a partially serated probably in the 3/12" range. As far as materials I am open. I know in that price range cheap steel is usually not an issue.

Hmm i dont have much experience with occasional carry folders in that range. I do have a benchmade griptillian in D2 thats in the 70-80 range and i'd recommend it to anyone. its definately more of a EDC, but i dont see why it couldnt be a ODC (occasional day carry) i think i just made that up :)

I just have to say, "get a BM mini Rukus". I've seen them for around the price you are talking and they seem to be getting positive reviews. I do not have one yet but do have the full size and am impressed with it so much that I rarely carry my others! Depending on the size the mini has a 3.4" S30V drop point blade with a swedge, and the Rukus has a 4.25" blade with a flat grind drop point.

I just got my SOG tomcat 3, and it seems semi indestructible to me. The blade is 3.75 and falls nicely in your price range (I got mine for 125)

steel is V10, handle is krayton. It grips nicely and seems to be as sturdy as any knife I've ever seen. I don't know much about benchmades or spyderco, but I would recommend at least looking this one up and considering it among the others. Be warned, it looks alot more tame in pictures than it feels in your hand. I personally like that alot, but it depends on what you're going to use it for.
