Need Advice on Ocean Knife

I'm planning to take a trip to the ocean, soon (probably somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico).

The ideal knife for what I want would doubtless be the Spyderco Salt. However, due to the frequency of frivolous searches and confiscations on so many airlines, I would rather take something that I won't worry about losing (other that the obvious trauma of not having a knife with me ).

I've seen the Queen Big Chief dive knives, and I skeptical as to how useful they would be. Has anyone had any experience with these? If I get one, I would probably paint or rubberize (spray-on Plasti-Dip) the handle. The blade is a little longer than I would like for trouble-free carry.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? It need not be a dive knife, per se, just one that won't rust too quickly while being carried in swim trunks and exposed to salt water for 2-3 days.

Are there any steels that won't rust too quickly.

I would reccomend a frosts stainless mora clipper 12 bucks at ragweed forge they're are cheap functional stainless knives that come with a decent edge and hold it pretty darn well..the blades are mirror polished and won't rust easily..the handles are close to perfect...The sheath is nothing spectacular but will function as a dive sheath as it is plastic and has a drainage hole in the bottom of it.

well if u have money ai i wrote beafore on 1 thread, go with mission knives. They are best you can buy and they are made from titanium. That means they are rustfree and they are official knives of SEAL. They are bit softer then steel blades, around 45 rc, but honestlly on boat or sea what can u cut above that? You aint gona chop the wood or something so i think they are great, only downside is price but thats 1 in life time buy.

If you are worried about the knife being taken on airlines I have learned to put my knives in my cargo baggage in one of my pants pockets. It helps to protect the knife.

I fly commercial airlines all the time with knives and pistols, just put it in your check baggage and you will be fine. If you are flying with a handgun put it in a locked case, unloaded and with no ammo in the same case and declare it when you check your bags. Chris

if air travel is the prime issue A blade in a checked bag is of no concern to the flight crew I bring several blades with me when I travel by plane....Also for about 50 bucks another decent alternative is the sog seal pup

I fly all the time too, and frequently take knives, gun cases to go hunting and shooting back with my relatives back in the midwest. Surprisingly, never had a problem with checked baggage...just itemize your valuables in case of loss/theft. Just don't bring too much ammo, you are limited to a few Lbs...found this out the hard way when I tried to stock up on cheap target loads at Farm & Fleet and bring them back to california where I am stationed (ammo prices suck out here :grumpy: )

I would go for the spyderco pacific salt...awesome knife, not "too" expensive. Spyderco should pay me a commission for all the business I sent thier way from my ship as the resident knife knut!:)

I've been feeling the salt also I think this might become my new dive/snorkel knife...As now that I'm married I often go on resort or "touristy" dive and snorkel trips and they are usually packed with sheeple...

I have carried a regular Old Delica For a Snorkel/ Swimming Knife for years without problem. I just clip it in the waistband of shorts with its clip and my "Dunlop" retention system.

I can only imagine the Salt to be equal or better.
