Need advice on older CR Mark IV

I am at a transition in my life, looking for a different knife. I have a very well loved MK IV that I got shortly after Chris started making them. It is serial numbered 13. The back story is long and interesting, but to cut to the chase, I carried the knife for 10 years in the Army and recently through Hurricane's Katrina and Gustav while working here on security in New Orleans.

I am looking to get one of the more compact CR models i.e. Skinner or Mountaineer I. I think I want to sell the Mk IV (although it has been with me so long and served so well) :(

Anyway, the question is, what do you folks think. Should I have the knife refinished by Chris, or will it hurt the collectibility of the knife? How much do you think it would bring and more importantly, where would it sell best? Thanks for any advice. Lots of beautiful knives on this forum.

I would keep that knife!! I would also suggest calling CRK and see what they say about the refurb. If it were mine, I WOULD have CRK refurb it.

Absolutely keep it!

The knife may be valuable to others b/c of its age, but it's far more valuable to you because you've been through so much with it!

If you need money to buy a new CRK, I would actually advice you to keep your own, and look at alternatives that may cost a little less outside of CRK (no disrespect to CRK - I love the entire line, and can't wait to pick up a sebenza, worth every dime, but not to sell this knife!)

I would keep the MK IV, and I would not have it refurbished. Never mind resale, that would hurt its nostalgic value to you.

Get the new knife when you can, and let them represent two different periods in your life.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Interestingly, this discussion came up in our Bible study this morning. Used it as an illustration about transitions in ministry and reflecting on how we were used in the past. I am definitely going to keep the Mark IV and all it represents. I will start saving my pennies for a Mountaineer I. Thanks again. Maybe I will post some photos of my well loved Mark IV.
