I need advice on the Flash II. Does it hold an edge? Is the speed mechanism reliable? How is the lockup?

for a few months now. I got it used and from the finish on the black coating I'd say it did some honest work. Lock up is good, you won't disengage this one on accident. The blade is a good size and shape and SOG's treatment of AUS8 makes a fine working blade. The SAT on my Flash II is every bit as good as the AO on my Wife's Kershaw Blackout. Overall, a very well thought out design.

The lockup on my is questionable at best. There is some slack in the negative blade-loading direction. With the blade clamped and myself trying to fold the knife closed, the FRN handle flexes a whole lot and I closed it once once with moderate force.

But on the plus side the blade grind is functional, the knife can be had for cheap, and you can auto-ize it.

Is the aluminum handle solid? Is the aluminum handle version heavy? How's the aluminum handle grip?

how do you auto ize it?

I don't recall mine rattling enough to be annoying; in any case the two parts in mine are epoxyed together now.

SIRGALANT, forum member [Mr] Bill DeShivs does them for a modest profit, forum member the_mac has raised the possiblity of grinding down the head end of the piston so it is a little shorter, and my opinion is to file back the slot a little and offsetting the piston and thumb button a little bit via epoxy or such. Details in this thread.

I have been reading old posts about the Flash II. The reviews are mixed. Is it just hit or miss? Or do the older Flash IIs have more problems? Or do the zytel handle one have more problems?

I am perplexed by this as well. I have been reading some very negative statements lately.
I have read many good reviews in the past, perhaps many more good then bad.
However, I think it is just a matter of subjective opinion.
I still stand by my claim that the sog flash II alum. handle is a great knife for the money. It is sold, it does not rattle, opens great, and it is very sharp.
It just depends on who you ask and if they are comparing apples to apples.
I will say that I think the alum. handle is far better than zytel though, but hey thats just my opinion.

I have two of the Zytel handles both about a year old. They are both good knives for the monrey.....no issues with them.

How is SOG's warrantee / repairs department? Is it fast turnaround? Would they give you a new one if you got one with blade play?

There's an easy way to find out: check with SOG's warranty department.

If you have any questions as to what our warranty covers, please feel free to contact our warranty department at (425) 771-6230, ext. 229.
