A customer wants a Cold Blued 26c3 EDC knife. I told him it will wear off with use. He still wants it. I have never cold blued a hole blade before.

Any suggestion on surface finish and surface prep before I do it?
Or any advice at all?

Thanks
Jason

Looks like you'll be telling us :D

Oxpho-blue from Brownell's. It's not as "blue" as others but it is as durable as cold bluing gets. You want most cold bluing under 600 grit. 400 really would be fine. Too polished and it doesn't take as well. Degrease, degrease, degrease.

You could always find a gunsmith and have him do it right for you.

I'm with Adam. Have a proper blue job done by a professional. I only did it once but I sent it out. It cost me $50. Easily worth it for me. Add it to the cost of the knife. If you are only going to do it once in a.....wait for it..........blue moon (worth the wait, right?) have someone do it for you. If it is a service you're likely to offer regularly, learn how to do it.

Rust bluing is easily done at home. It's time-consuming, but it looks great and holds up better than any other bluing.
Rust bluing is NOT cold bluing.

Sandblast it and you'll get a much darker finish, that and I'm thinking it will wear better than on a smooth surface. Just make sure to neutralize the blade after cold bluing and also saturate the surface with oil if it's sandblasted.

You could always parkerize the blade which is a pretty durable finish and is used fairly often by a number respectable bladesmiths. Less involved than hot blueing too.
