I already have a nice Meerkat that I edc.

But I would like a medium sized fixed blade knife for hunting. I've been very impressed with the SOG stuff I've seen to date. What is everyone's impresion of the SOG X-42 Field Knife and the steel it uses?

Is there anything comparable from Benchmade I should look at? Anything else of note?

Thanks very much in advance,

Christopher

For a real good user you might want to check out Ruana knives. They've been about the best real users for the last 60 years. A small (6-7" total length) is the 10B for a blade with a belly or the 10A for more of a sticker. The 11A is a little longer and more of a sticker.

You might want to check out their website for real hunting knives.

They're a lot of knife for the money.

Mate, The Sog is a good knife....as good as or
better than many. The handle is good , the steel is
a well up to most task and the blade shape is
adaptable.

So........if you like it buy it!!:D All the advice
here will do is........cornfuse you!!

What Tightwad said. There's nothing wrong with the X-42, although I think it might be a bit big for a hunting knife. On whitetail deer I like a 3"-3.5" blade. Anything bigger gets tricky when you're trying to work up in the body cavity. If you're hunting moose or bear, well, the X-42 might be just about right! I use a Shrade Sharpfinger as my hunting knife right now, but I think I may get a Marbles or a Bark River for my next one. I prefer carbon steel and I don't mind the patina it develops, so if you like shiny blades these definitely aren't for you. Just my .02.

Benchmade makes the Outbounder that would be a better (shorter) length than the X-42. If you could find one on the internet that had a D2 alloy blade it would be a praticularly good deal.

I would also go to the AG Russell website and look at his Deer Hunter model in either D2 or VG-10 alloy steel. The size and shape are great for real hunting work and the thin blades are terrific cutters. The hard bayonet-like sheath may not be to your taste. One of the very best hunting knife designs around is the Cold Steel Master Hunter. I like it in Carbon V carbon steel particularly. This is about the longest hunting knife that I would suggest.

What Jeff Clark said.

In addition, the Fallkniven F1 in either the hard durometer rubber (Thermorun) or better, the micarta would do nicely. 3 sheath choices, a dangler (not my cup of tea), a flap/pouch type (ok), and a kydex sheath (haven't handled this one, has potential...but...).

A used Dozier straight hunter would be a great choice, but double your current price point also. But Bob makes a bunch of good designs... stick to the simpler ones (no finger grooves, simple blade shapes) and you'll be happier if you use the knife much. The Slim Outdoorsman, General Utility, and Semi-skinner are all nice designs, various sizes.

Surf around AG Russell's page... he's got some nice hunters out there, depending on your price range.

You might also look at the Spyderco Moran drop point. I have used mine quite a bit and think highly of it. The VG-10 blade keeps its edge well and is easy to sharpen when it finally does go dull. The handle has a very good feel, to me anyway. I also like the supplied sheath. If I remember correctly, I only gave about $60 for mine a couple of years ago. I hunt constantly, and find it a good value for the money.

All are good suggestions. I hunt deer and elk. I have found the swamprat howling rat to be an excellent tool and it is very affordable.

I second the Cold Steel Master Hunter w/Carbon V...It's the best huntin knife i've ever owned. Takes an edge and holds it well, handle doesn't slip when wet, balanced well, flat grind slices like crazy !! GREAT knife for huntin, IMHO

If it is for this season, spend $10 and get a Frost's (of Sweden) Swedish Army Knife.
OD 'plastic' handle & sheath, 4" blade, scandi grind and a little cutting machine.
I bought them for me and my hunting buddies last X-Mas. Mine arrived sharp and now is downright scarey after polishing with 800 grit on a mousepad.

Then save up for the Dozier ;)
You won't look back

Bass ProShops has the Buck Vanguard (4 inch blade) in ATS-34, and the price is quite reasonable. My memory is a little sketchy now but I think I paid around $65 for mine.

Hello,

Have you appraoched any of the custom guys with specs.

Somebody might surpprise you.

If not nobody has mentioned the "Grunt" from Blackjack. I have not personally handled this one but it seems to fit your needs. Not expensive either. Marble's might also be worth looking at...Both are American companies. Good to spend your dollars at home.

Let us know what you choose.

Shane

I use Buck Zipper-R, it was not expensive (around $60), and works well.

I also have a folder on me when I go hunting, most of the time a BM 806D2

I too really like the Moran. Have both blade styles & the handle has the krayton inserts for a very secure , comfortable grip. The VG-10 holds an edge extremely well.
