So I'm at fedex, shipping a blade out of the US and they are requiring the social security number of the citizen I'm sending to.. that normal? Also they are asking about the items value?
Advice please

I use usps. Have not had to give social.
I also claim the item as a camping tool (spade). $20 value.
I have shipped 4 blades over seas with this method. Zero issues.

Where you sending to ? Social/value is for customs/knife laws (you are saying you are sending to a US citizen, social is normally not needed), value also for insurance.

Yeah, That's WAY Bizarre to be asked that...!
WHO would KNOW someone else's SSN if it wasn't your spouse or your child?
That's halfway to Identity Theft; and I would CALL the Main National Office of Fed-Ex and Ask:
1) IF that is Policy
2) IF anyone has a common way of complying with that request (I doubt this highly)
3) IF Not Policy, WHY would a Fed-Ex worker even Ask such a thing, do they suspect...?

I would sure like to hear their response on those inquiries...

Never heard of it asked; also 🤔 ..why their social & not yours?

as many have said
SSN= really weird, I would unwind the deal.
value= determined by the buyer, so you can put whatever they want.

where are you shipping ? I ship all over and I mean all over, this is the first I have heard of this.

Look guys, we don’t know enough .... he’s sending to a “citizen” internationally. Maybe to avoid customs, and customs wants proof ?

Each country has different rules about what forms or additional paperwork is required for different commodities, working on shipping for the last seven years I've never seen a country that requires a SSN, the closest I've was a phone number required for the recipient if going to a PO Box

Turns out the SSN is required for customs. according to the buyer it's not that uncommon in Italy. But boy I felt weird having to ask the buyer that.
Crazy..
Thanks for all the help guys

I've shipped internationally many times and never provided a ssn. Is it a u.s. citizen in italy? otherwise I can't imagine they would even have such a thing.

That’s what the OP said. SSN is a US concept. Trying to avoid paying customs ...

It looked to me like they have a number simular to our ssn but for some other use. But it must still be refered to as a ssn cause he knew exactly what fed ex needed. An the number is a mix of numbers an letters more like a vin# . Fed Ex asked for their Socail Security Number an to anyone here in the states like me.. asking for someone's ssn has scam written all over it. It was awkward but turned out to be no big deal.

It’s the "codice fiscale" - tax number.
