I've been posting a lot of threads recently. I feel like I am flooding BladeForums. But here's another anyways.

If you saw my prior thread, I received a dull Spyderco Manix 2. I need some advice now; should I try and sharpen the blade with my Sharpmaker, (Medium rods and Fine rods) or send it to Spyderco for $5? Thanks

Learn to sharpen get that sharpmaker out of the close.
First of all Spyderco sets their secondary bevels (edge) below 20 degrees per side on purpose to make it easy to sharpen and extend the life of the edge/knife. Sal recommends the use of the sharpmaker@20 degrees per side to sharpen.
Start with the corners on the medium stones, then with flats on the medium stones.
Repeat for the finer stones.
Follow that/watch it.

Unless you plan on sending it on every time it needs sharpened I say just sharpen it up and use it. It's gonna need it eventually anyway.

Sharpen it.

If you intend on using it, it's going to need to be sharpened on a regular basis.

Learning to sharpen a knife, regardless of how you do it, is the first thing everyone should do before they buy their second knife....

No reason to not start now.

The Sharpmaker is not as easy to use as it seems.

Make sure you Sharpie the edge to ensure that you're hitting it, and pick up a set of the ultra fine stones. They make a huge difference....

What's wrong with sharpening it on your sharpmaker? That seems like it would be faster and more efficient.

If you take your time, don't be in a hurry and follow the advice given already, you will be successful with sharpening your own knife. Do right by your own hands :)

Did you buy it new, used, from a reputable dealer or what?

Do you know how to sharpen? I'm not going to read your other threads to find out what you know.

If you do.....sharpen it.

If you have the cash, I'd buy a Wicked Edge sharpening system. There's less of a learning curve but it comes at a price. If you're not confident in your abilities to learn how to sharpen and dont have the cash at the moment, then I suggest just sending it out to spyderco.

Slow and easy on the Sharpmaker until your body remembers the motion. Sal makes it look too easy in the videos. Do it at half speed and keep your knife oriented properly and it will sharpen itself. I find that waist level is better for me then chest level - fuller stroke and more control. That might not be the case for everyone but I pass it on just in case it makes it easier for you too.

I sharpen my UKPK on my Tormek T-3, get a perfect edge, effortlessly. And the automatic leather honing wheel is a godsend! After about a minute I can shave hairs off my arm :)
