I'm on the verge of ordering my first Sebenza. I've never held one, but after reading opinions in different forums, it seems to be what I'm wanting. I've only seen pictures (and some are great photos, at that). The Plain Large Classic with bead blast handles look great, to me, especially when they start to show just a little character, from pocket wear. The one that I am looking at now, though, has the new Micarta Inlays. I love the rough texture and the looks of the canvas micarta. Great combination of textures - like it was made for these handles.
I guess my question is: What makes these so desirable, that I would pay that kind of bucks, having never touched one. Are these really so much better than a $150 folder? I think I just need a little nudge to push me over the edge, so that I can place my order.
Thanks!

It is a shame that you don't have a knifeshop nearby to "feel" each type. However, the Sebenzas are much better than the $150.00 knives that you refer to. The edges, retention and fit/smoothness are better than any of the other folders I have used. You won't be sorry you got one. Also check around, a lot of the custom knifemakers carry Sebenzas.

I got my first Sebenza a little over a month ago, without ever touching one. After I finally got over my fear of using it, the Sebenza has become my favorite knife. I am in the process of getting rid of most of my cheaper knives because it IS that damn good!!! Now, I do have several old Case knives that won't ever leave my possession, but the other big name brands are taking a walk. Go ahead and get it, you won't regret it. ;)

Most of us on this forum feel that the sebenza warrants the price. One thing to keep in mind is that Sebbies are very salable in the secondary market, albeit at a discount. If you buy a sebbie and don't like it, someone is ready to buy it at the right price. I have done this with countless knives, including a few sebbies, until I found the ones I like.

I bought my first Sebenza without seeing one, either. I took a very big step and it has been worthwhile. All I had to judge on were a few photographs kindly took for me and the forums members relevant threads.

What I like is, well - it's easier read in a little list;

1. That they seem to be so consistant with quality, all my knives have outstanding build and function.

2. The simplicity of maintenance, easily stripped and reassembled.

3. The blade fulcrums on a pivot bearing. I don't have to worry about screw tension in relation to blade swing - you simply sweeten up all the screws and the bearing controls the blade settings.

4. The CRK backup is superb. If something does go off, you can rest assured it will be seen to.

5. Yes sir, I think they're worth the money. Even for someone who's a little short and wants to go second hand, they will still have a great knife.

BTW, it's morning and, to tell the truth, last night's Guinness is still an influence. If i've forgotten something, i'll return  :D

Mark :)

Used sebenzas are a great deal, they might have some marks but they will get that anyway and for $100 or $150 off you still have a knife that essentially is like new. (Ok maybe needs sharpening)

If you are unsure, I suggest have patience and get a used one for between $250 and $275.

Thanks to everyone for the support. I don't know of a knife shop here in Houston, that has one in stock. I just needed to hear someone tell me how they feel and operate, nudging me over the line. I think I'll order one!
Thanks!!

roefisher summed it up well. Like him I bought mine without handling one first. Never have been disappointed. Have three now; one large and two small custom graphics. I use the one custom graphic as an edc and hardly ever without it.

Thanks!
I just purchased a Large, plain one on Ebay. Waiting for delivery.
I had bid on a Micarta Inlay, but it looked like a bidding war, so I let him have it for 405 bucks. I'm thinking that I should have tried to outbid him (sigh), but for my first purchase, I went for the cheaper, plain Large Sebenza. I really like the way they look, anyway.
Now, I'm really anxious!
Was I wrong to pass on the Micarta? I'm kicking myself, now, but I'm sure that they'll make more.

they will, indded make more!

"crunch all you want, we'll make more!" Doritos....

ha ha ha

there are more out there than on eGay!

also...

post here in the knives wanted section...you will get some answers.

I bought my first one the same way. Having never held one previously. I bought and sold two other Sebbies before finding the one I like the most which is my third and current Sebbie... a large Regular with Dual silver thumbstuds and silver backspacer. :D

CRK fit and finish is incredible. If you like the way it looks you’ll love the way it feels and functions.

There is a like new wood inlay for sell on another forum right now for 340.00 and yes they are worth the price.
I carry my Bacote large Classic about 95% of the time swapping it out every now and then with my Strider PT.

Thanks for all the advice!
I got the Large Regular Sebenza, this afternoon. It's everything that I hoped for. Actually, it's a little larger than I expected - And that's a Good Thing! Only, now it makes me want a small one to go with it. Maybe, with Micarta Inlays.
It was carried about 1 week, but never used or sharpened.
Now that's smooth! Fits just right in my hand. Looks just rugged enough. The edges of the slabs aren't wearing, yet. I think they're like fine leather. They look good when they are crisp and new, but get better as they start to wear in - gives 'm cahracter.
Well, I've cut just about everything on the desk, except the chord to the monitor. I'm going outside and try it out. Look out dog!

Congratulations on your sebbie! Now the first thing you need to do is take it apart and put it back together again! :)
And, yeah, that small one with micarta inlays is hard to resist...evermore since a Neil Roberts is coming my way and it would make a great companion!

I just took it apart and reassembeled it. ;) You just can't appritiate the simplicity and precision, until you take it apart. In fact, I found that it needed cleaning. Works even smoother, now.
