:eek:People often ask me why I carry knives sometimes hinting that I'm a nut for doing so. Yet hardly a day goes by when someone doesn't ask me to use my knife. How should I reply?

I just say I use it to open boxes, letters... and sometimes nosy people... ;)

They don't quite know how to respond to that, so most of the time they just laugh... and go away.

"Ever open boxes, envelops, packages, wrappers? Ever needed to whittle down a stick for around a bonfire in the fall to roast a hot dog? Ever needed to slice a tomato, ever had a dull steak knife at a restaurant? Ever needed to perform an emergency trachaeotomy? Ever felt scared in the dark in backstreet alley? Then it sounds like you'd be lucky to have a knife like I do!"

:D

I just tell him what I use it for, and than they understand and feel like an idiot.

To be truthful, I am seldom asked. People seldom know I carry a knife until they know me pretty well. By the time they know me, it's not an issue. They know I am a stable regular guy, so it's not an issue if I carry a knife.

People that don't know me don't know that I carry a knife until it needs to be used. Then, they're happy I have one. The people who do know me realize that its use is limited to use as a tool.

Keep them in your pocket, use them as a tool, and enjoy them. I tell people that carrying a pocket knife is almost like having a watch on your wrist. It is useful to have, not a burden to carry and comes in handy when you need one. It is good to educate sheeple on the traditions of this country, not so long ago mind you!

I use these two....

1. Person: "Why do you carry a knife?"
Me: "Why Not?"

2. Person: "Why do you carry a knife?"
Me: "Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it"

Well, Actually, 3...

Person: "Why do you carry a knife?"
Me: "Because I Can"

If someone wants to borrow a knife, I'd say go ahead and let them. But tell them you don't want it scratched up and it wouldn't be impolite to inquire what they intend to do with it. I know most people well enough that I don't have to worry about offending them.

You might also carry a cheaper knife to loan out and to use for grimy tasks.

I assume "keep it in your pocket" means don't needlessly wave it around because it's difficult to use a knife while it's in your pocket. Also I'm surprised no one came up with one of my main uses for a knife. Right behind opening boxes/packages, I use my knife most for trimming cigars.
