Here's my dilemna:
I just bought a SOCOM elite, and I love it. But it's kind of big for everyday carry. So I was wondering if you guys think I should take the time to track down a Mini-Socom or just get one of the MODs. (I was think about the small version of the Dieter? the one with the window breaker) Also, if someone can tell the length of blade on the Mini-socom, it would be appreciated. I'm looking for about a 3" blade.

I'd get the mini-socom if I were you. Those Dieters have WAY too much handle for the blade size. It's like putting a boat anchor in your pocket.

The little Dieter CQDII is the perfect size for daily carry. It's not at all cumbersome. Take a look here where I have a review and pix comparing it in size to my Commander and LCC. http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum44/HTML/000004.html
I've been carrying this CQDII daily for a couple of weeks now. It's an absolute keeper.

I've never handled either knife so only have one design comment. That is handle shape. While I'm entranced with both the knives you're deciding between, I can't get away from noticing the way the MOD moves/shrinks down to a point at the butt.

My hands do far better gripping if the handle gets larger towards the butt, or has a pinky hook, or something. Too slim handles, particularly at the rear are just extremely difficult for me to hold comfortable, or, more importantyl, confidently.

Still, would really like that carbide tip.

Happy choosing!

BTW, BUG3x that's kind of wierd, I mean I just don't worry about the handle getting thick at the end. I have the MOD ladyhawk and I think it is great. I have medium sized hands and I'm incredibly impressed as to how such a small knife feels so natural. But I guess you wouldn't like it.

Check out the MOD Hornet. If you're looking for a smaller knife of similar construction to the Microtech Mini-Socom, this would be a good choice.

I have the M-SOCOM, but I would also suggest you take a look at the MT Kestrel also, it's a little more $$$ but it's hard to beat it's WOW factor.

MOD's are hard to beat also, I have a Tempest that is excellent, also hear great things about the CQD's.

From what I have seen the MT's are generally more desireable here so if you ever plan to sell it later you'll probably get a better return on the MT, IMHO. The exception to this rule is the M-SOCOM, people are getting rid of them fairly cheap.

I like mine a lot, the blade is just under 3" and it's very light. The clip is a bit weak and is hard to clip to a pair of jeans. The knife sticks about and inch out of your pocket so it's not exactly deep carry.

1SKS has them new for under $100, if you buy one be sure to request an inspection when you place the order and they will check it for blade play, lock-up and rub on the handle. Every M-SOCOM I have held suffered from one or more of these problems. I went through 3 before finding one I thought was acceptable.

With that said, if you get a good one the M-SOCOM is a great knife and will last a very long time, IMO. I think that even the ones that have a little blade flex or rubbing are fine as long as it does not affect lock-up, as long as you're not annoyed to death by it.

Really you can't go wrong with either company though, both stand behind their product and are excellent to deal with.

I know that does not help your decision at all though.
