Hello all,

I've been lurking on the forums for a while, but this is my first post.

I need advise regarding short-swords/wakizashis. I've decided that i want to buy a sword around 30" in length with a two handed grip, and while lurking on these forums, i've found that a wakizashi tends to meet that criteria. Although, any short sword with a two handed grip, made from decent steel, will do. As examples, i like the following:

Tactical Wakizashi from Hanwei made from 5160 spring steel
http://casiberia.com/product/tactical-wakizashi/sh2432
(though i've read that this sword tends to fall out of the scabbard)

Tibetan sword from Himalayan Imports ..also 5160 spring steel
http://www.himalayan-imports.com/sword.html

The Zakasushi from Zombie Tools -also 5160 spring steel (i believe), though pricey

If anyone can give some advice about where to look for similar swords, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Post your recommendations!

A lot of the usual places we can't mention because they're not forum supporters. What's the intended purpose of this sword? What's the budget? And where are you from?

-There is no specific purpose past home defense, zombie apocalypse, and childhood sword obsession that i never grew out of. I should also mention I value practicality over the art/aesthetic value. I also wouldn't mind actually learning how to use that damn thing at some point. EDIT: i'm also a closet prepper ...bullets will run out.
-My budget is 200-300, but I'm willing to pay more if i find something truly worth it.
-I'm from Kentucky. ..its humid in the summer and dry in the winter.

??? Usual places we can't mention??? this has my attention.

Dealspotting rules prevent me from mentioning most of my favorite places to buy. There's a cultish place that's generally got good prices.

You might just look into a Cold Steel machete short sword, like the katana machete or the gladius machete, or the kopis, or, etc. The list continues. Those are pretty darn good for the 30 bucks or so you'll pay for them. I'm not fond of their pricier stuff, but the inexpensive stuff is really quite good value. Condor also has some decent values.

If you want something more interesting, Kris Cutlery is also worth looking at. Hanwei, Bugei, Musashi, Ronin all have some relatively decent offerings within or below your price range. And Archer Here (Scorpion Swords) makes some good stuff. I've even been known to sell a custom short sword in the upper end of your price range, although I've got no plans for a short sword for some time unless materials cost is paid up front. I can't speak for the other custom makers, but possibly David Stifle, Storm Crow, or Miller Bros might be able to make you something nice that you would be very proud of.

Thanks for the recommendations and the prompt response. I've looked at the cold steel stuff, and some of it looks good for the price, but I'm partial to spring steel for my future sword. Though I'm willing to compromise. I also look forward to checking out your many other recommendations!

Is there any specific sword someone can recommend??

Hi Pinkeye, if you search on the names crimsonfalcon07 mentioned you will find a number of sites that carry swords and can probably learn quite a bit about what to look for. Search for similar threads like yours in this forum and you'll find information also. If you want to send me an email, I can give you the name of another site that has some good information and sells swords in your price range. Mike

Neat picking: I don't think wakizashi should have a to hand grip. That belongs to kodachi.
