Hi, Im looking to get a Mt. Man and a couple have caught my eye:

The first is a Queen Mt.Man in Carved Stag Bone and is made with D2.

The second knife is a Schatt & Morgan Mt.Man with smooth bone scales and is made with 420 steel. I've heard 420 steel is rather soft, but to be honest, I would only be using this knife for light cutting chores.

I like the look of both and what i'm looking for is a nice lockback for EDC. (right now I carry a Queen Gunstock in CSB) . If anyone has any advice on either knife or can recommend a similar knife I'd be very greatful (I would like to keep the price under $100US). Thanks in advance for helping make up my mind...

P.S.: I hope the pictures show....

edited to fix the pictures... pics from Cumberland Knife Works

I would highly recommend a Buck 110. Cabelas does offer a Buck 110 in their exculsive Alaskan Guide series in S30V for less than what you would pay for a Schatt in ATS34. According to the spec sheet supplied with my knife, ATS34 and S30V are quite similar with S30V alittle better than ATS34. The blades on the Alaskan Guide 110 is heat treated by Paul Bos, a well know heat treat specialist, and all that you pay less than 100/- shipped.

Knife choice is a very subjective thing. What I consider a great knife someone else might think its the biggest POS on the market. With that being said, I've chosen to mostly buy what I like and want regardless of popular opinion. You should also do this, its your money.

Sometimes I get something that doesn't work out and it goes back on the market for sale or trade. Lesson learned.

As far as the choice of the 2 Queens, the difference's in handle type, steel, usage, and price for what you are getting should determine which one you buy. Both are great looking knives made by Queen out of good materiels, I don't think you can make a bad choice here. I personally like the D2 bonestag model, looks like a real "mountian man" type folder that could handle alot if you ever have to work it hard.

On the other hand, you shouldn't listen to me and buy the one that you want.

Buy what you like! Queen makes both you are looking at, they are both nice. The only thing I could suggest is buying them from Bill at cumberland knifeworks, he will look them over for you if you ask. Bill is a very nice guy. Thsi way you can be sure you do not get a defective one! If it wil not see thta much cutting gof or the 420, it will work fine for that.

But it all comes down to, your the one buying it, so you should get whatever you like!

Either one is a great knife, I am somewhat partial to my Queen Carved Stag Bone D2 Mountian Man though, it's a true classic and a great cutter!

thanks for the replies guys! Just to let you know, I think Ill be going for the Queen CSB to match my gunstock CSB. Plus it is cheaper ;) :D Ive also looked at a buck 110 (thanks nagamitsu!!) and I think I may save up to get a custom one with Waterbuff, N/S, fingergrooves, and BG-42. Or Stag, brass and finger grooves.

Thats the thing with knife buying (at least for me)... too many chocies.....:D
thanks again
