Hi Hogettes and Hogs,

I'm planning some vacations in the west of the US for this summer.
Flights, hotels, car, everything is booked...

Now, I need your advise for the most important!

Wich knive am I allowed to carry?

We will have a lot of picnics, trecks in the National Parks, so that a folder, (slip joint) and a fixed blade will come with me.

Due to the fact that legislation is to complicated for me in the US, (yes I know! It can not be as simple as in France in the rest of the world!!;) Here every knife is forbidden!:(, so that no mistake is possible!!:grumpy:).

The States we will cross: California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Idaho, Montana Wyoming, South Dakota.

So if someone can tell me wich maximum blade lengh in both cases is admissible in the most restrictive State we will visit, I will comply...

Thanks in advance.

Amicalement

Jean-Luc

PS: the folder will be if possible carried in the pocket, the fixed in the rucksack!

For a pocket knife, I would say something along the lines of a good Swiss Army knife would be my first choice, but any folder with a primary blade under 3 inches should be allowable just about anywhere except in places like court houses, government buildings, and, of course, airports. For a fixed blade, assuming you're keeping the folder as well, I would say something around 5 inches or a little longer should handle anything you're likely to need on a day hike. Not a whole lot of reason to carry a fixed blade knife any smaller than that when you've already got a blade that long in your pocket.

Colorado has a 3.5" blade limit.

You can carry bigger, camping, fishing and hunting is an affirmative defense, meaning you get to tell that to the judge.

That's exactly the point!

I don't want to tell it to any judge or police officer!

Any of the listed States more restrictive?

Los Angeles in CA is kinda funky about knives so if you try to go into like Disneyland or any of the theme parks I know they make you remove your knife if they see it. For the most part western states are cool as long as you're not being stupid with it.

Check out www.kniferights.org

Great organization that has put a ton of time and money into researching knife laws so they can explain it to those of us that don't speak lawyer talk.

Even though Louisiana is not on your list, I will say they are forgiving when comes to the carrying of knives/guns...... as long as you are not involved in some sort of criminal activity. Open carry firearms just about anywhere except schools, hospitals, and bars except where prohibited by owner. No "State issued" knife size laws (may differ on a local municipality law) .....if you want to carry a machete, so be it. Only "size" regulation I have found was on our college campus, you can't carry a knife on campus with a blade larger than 6 inches.

In Arizona everything is legal, auto's to swords.
Knife Rights got that done for us.

EVERYTHING!!!!!!! I need to move to Arizona. I will need a MOAB and a Barrett. :p
