I am on the market for a fitet knife but do not want to spend a lot of $$ on it. it will be used mainly for fish.. what are some brands and prices of filet knives you guys use? i was thinking Mora FT896.. $20.00 plus shipping. not too shabby for a good knife. I wasnt introduced to Mora's until i joined this site

I've heard good things about Rapala fillet knives. Some guys swear by them. Seems like many of them run for less than $20. Might want to take a look around there and see if anything catches your interest.

I have a walmart special Rapala, it does all my needs and is flexible, cheap, and easily replaceable. There's nothing to lose except about $10.

you guys do have a good point.. i have a gerber filet but i cannot get it sharpened and its no where near as sharp as it used to be.. perhaps my angle is wrong dunno

Try a Rapala. If you find it's not quite right, you will be out very little money. Then you can buy something else at which time the Rapala will make a nice spare.

I have 3 Rapalas myself and love them. I took a diamond file and made a short section of serrations near the handle for cutting through fish backbones.

Never tried a Mora. Will have to look those up.

Rapala or Dexter Russell are the two top values in fillet knives IMO.

Don't overlook Victorinox either.

Here's an old picture of some fillet knives. Just guessing, but I probably have about 5 or 6 more now.

Guyon, third knife in from the left... is that the low production Busse fillet?

Hmm, or maybe a Knives of Alaska?

Thanks!
:)

Oh, I grew up on the Rapalas and have cleaned (filleted) hundreds of fish with them.
Very good serviceable stuff.

That is a 6" Busse fillet. Jerry hand ground a batch of 4", 5", and 6" fillets way back when.

I do have a Knives of Alaska set of two fillet knives that I bought at Blade 2007. I think it's called the Fisherman's Combo. I like those knives very much.

Rapala knives are made by Marttiini of Finland, I believe. Really excellent knives for the price.

Forschner or Dexter Russell fillet knives are what most of the local/long range fishing boats use out of L.A./San Diego,SoCal. Rapala Is good too, especially the ones with the textured rubber handles.
:D
