Need an old-fashioned "gentleman's" knife

Hello gents,

I'm looking for a few different knives to buy. I'd prefer them to be folders, not too large and heavy (in other ways, something unobtrusive and easy to carry in, say a suit breast pocket or even leg pocket or something of that sort). Something preferably straight-edge, and simple yet classy (but clearly, above all, it must be a high-quality little gem capable of a hard day's work). As to their looks, I need something specific...without being, well, specific!

I'm looking for something that appears old-fashioned, or "gentlemanly"...something along the lines of all those antler or wood handled babies you see out there. I hope this makes sense--you know the look I'm talking about, right? My price range is around $50 to $100...a little higher would be ok, but no $500 blades, as beautiful as they may be, please. :p

Suggestions, friends?

I don't know what you classify as hard work, but the Kershaw Double Cross is a nice mix of modern and classic.

Great Eastern Cutlery.
Beautifully made slipjoints, made with old machinery. Take them out of the oil wrapping, and you can smell the love of the factory. :)

+1 on Great Eastern. My gentleman's knife, or "white collar EDC," is their #25 Barlow with buffalo horn scales.

What about a Case knife, the steel the blades are made of is awesome and there is a wide variety of handle materials to suit anyone.

My long time favorite in this class, the made in Japan Kershaw 1993-2 Gentleman Folder, is a great small lockback with a decent 3.1" VG-10 blade and nice brass liners, etc, and black Micarta scales. The leather belt sheath is forgettable. MSRP was $130 and at least one vendor will come up with it 'in stock' at <$100, no mean feat as it has been out of their lineup - again - for a while. It's worth a hunt.

My current favorite is my latest Benchmade - this year's US-made 480-1 Shoki. The regular Shoki, a beauty made with a 2.9" x .090" blade of S30V and black G10/winwood scales, is likely over your limit. My local pusher insisted they were both priced correctly - and I got mine, a 480-1, for a 'steal'. Nice knife - the 480-1 has an m390 blade and carbon fiber handles. Both have Ti liners, push button lock, and some neat backspacer filework. Their included sheath is nice - nicer without the clip - and fits a watch pocket well, too. Warning: If you fondle one in your hands - you'll have to get one!

Take a look at Moki knives. They are not heavy duty, but certainly very well made, with bone or wood handles.
An alternative would be either Great Eastern or Queen, if you want something that will not lock.

One of my favorites is the Case swayback fits nicely in the pocket and works well around the office environment.

Buck , Case and even Shrade make nice little pocket folders and for alot less than 50 to 100 bucks too

I would check out some of the A. G. Russel knifes, as many of them are the style that you are looking for. I was recently looking for a gentleman-ish folder and had some nice ones recommended to me, but found that they didn't have what I was personally looking for (I really wanted a pocket clip).

I think you might find something you really like there.

Good luck!

If you want a straight edge I would highly recommend a Case Swayback. They are available with many different types of scales in a two blade Jack or single blade Gent configuration.

Great Eastern Cutlery's #62 Half Congress pattern would be another good choice. They can be found with either a wharncliffe or sheepfoot main blade.

Here is the Benchmade 480-1 Shoki and the Kershaw 1993-2 Gentleman's Folder together:

I found the BM, normal MSRP $220, marked $129 - the salesman said it was correct. I couldn't pass that up!

I'd recommend the Case Peanut in yellar derlin and CV or a Buck 309 Companion also if you want something a bit more modern Kershaw has the small yet useful Chive..
